Lauren Morelli (born July 22, 1982) is an American television screenwriter best known for her writing on Netflix's Orange Is the New Black and the production of Netflix's Tales of the City, a continuation of the Channel 4 1994 miniseries of the same name.
Early life
Morelli, who grew up in McCandless, Pennsylvania, graduated from Winchester Thurston School and later studied dance at Marymount Manhattan College in New York City, before a back injury ended her career in dance.

Morelli is a lesbian. Morelli, her husband of two years, Steve Basilone, filed for divorce in September 2014. Morelli revealed her engagement to actress Samira Wiley, with whom she had been in a relationship since publicly coming out on October 4, 2016. They married on March 25, 2017. Career
Morelli was encouraged by a college professor to pursue a career in writing after many years of mourning the death of her dancing career. She began with short stories and small blog pieces before landing her first professional writing job on Netflix's 2013 film Orange Is the New Black. For two episodes of Orange Is the New Black, "WAC-Pack," and "Total Men with Feelings," she was appointed as "lead writer" for two episodes. Morelli has also performed as a playwright, as her short film "Roach & Rat" was included in Lesser America's production of Just Right Now in New York.
