Life and career

Morante was born in Santa Fiora (Tuscany) and Francesco Lo Monaco, the nephew of Italian author and playwright Marcello Morante, and the uncle of novelist Elsa Morante. Maria Bona Palazzoeschi, Laura's mother, is the author of Laura's book.

Morante, a trained dancer, began her acting career on stage at 18 years old in Carmelo Bene's experimental company. She made her film debut in Oggetti Smarriti (Lost Belongings), directed by Giuseppe Bertolucci, whose brother, who would produce Morante's second film, La Tragedia di Un Ridiculous Man). She eventually had her breakthrough thanks to Nanni Moretti, who gave her the opportunity to play Bianca.

Morante's marriage to French actor Georges Claisse brought her to Paris, where she acquired a certain notoriety in European art cinema thanks to her appearance in numerous films. She returned to Italy in 2001 and received the David di Donatello for best actress in Moretti's The Son's Room. She was nominated for the David di Donatello award in 2003 by Gabriele Muccino's Remember Me, My Love, and later received the Silver Ribbon for best actress for Love Is Eternal (2003) by Carlo Verdone.

In the 2007 version of Molière, Morante attracted significant attention due to her appearance as the homeless Madame Jourdain, with whom the young Moliere, played by Romain Duris, falls in love. Helen Parr/Elastigirl appeared in The Incredibles, the Italian-dubbed version of the Pixar animated film. Morante made her directorial debut in France in 2012 with the French-Italian co-production Cherry on the Cake, for which she was nominated for the Best New Director award of the David di Donatello.
