In the ITV adaptation of South Riding, Pat Dunlop's daughter appeared in a BBC version of the classic A Little Princess and as Lydia Holly. Emily Carroll attended the Arts Educational School Her transition to adult roles began in 1976 when she appeared Lizzie Hexam in a BBC adaptation of Charles Dickens' Our Mutual Friend, and in the very first series of the long-running hospital drama Angels. Dunlop appeared in Regina Polanski's Tess (1979), alongside Diana Rigg and Elizabeth Taylor in Stephen Sondheim's A Little Night Music (1977). In David Lynch's 1980 Oscar nominated film, she played Nora, the nurse who is first afraid of The Elephant Man and then befriends John Hurt's character. Luna, the anthropomorphic ghoul who befriends Stuart Whitman, appeared in The Monster Club (1981).

She has appeared on British television regularly throughout her career, including Murder Most English (1977), Red Shift (1977), and Deadly Game (1982), as well as two guest appearances in Doctor Who's "Frontios" in 1984 and "The Happiness Patrol" in 1988. In the TV film Thirteen at Dinner (1985), she appeared opposite Oliver Tobias (1981) and Peter Ustinov (1985). In 1986, she appeared in the television version of Alan Ayckbourn's Seasons Greetings as the pregnant Pattie.
