Laura Diane Leighton (born July 24, 1968) is an American actress.

She is best known for her appearances on the television series Melrose Place (1993–1997) and its sequel (2009–2010) and her appearance on Freeform's series Pretty Little Liars (2010–2017).

Personal life

Leighton was born Laurie Miller in Iowa City, Iowa, and he is a 1986 graduate of West High School in Iowa City. During her time at West High School, Leighton served as both a cheerleader and a member of the school's show choir, and she appeared on several solos throughout her time with the club. Leighton left the Young Americans and appeared on their 1987 "Around the World in 80 Days" show.

Leighton assumed her maternal grandfather's surname in 1988.

Leighton married her Melrose Place co-star Doug Savant in May 1998. Jack and Lucy have two children together.

Leighton's first on-screen work in the early 1990s was in a commercial for Pizza Hut and Dep Hair Gel, before moving to Sydney Andrews in the prime time soap opera Melrose Place. The part was intended for just two episodes in season 1, but it was later extended to a full-time role for the subsequent seasons 2 to 5 (1993–97). Leighton appeared on numerous magazine covers (including Entertainment Weekly and Rolling Stone and People) during the show's run. Leighton left the show at the end of the fifth season in 1997, where she saw her character Sydney being struck and possibly killed by a car, only moments after she was welcomed by Craig Field, played by David Charvet.

During breaks when filming Melrose Place, Leighton appeared in In the Name of Love: A Texas Tragedy for FOX as Laurette Wilder, a woman from a poor background who falls for a wealthy man to the disgust of his grandparents, and The Other Woman for CBS as Carolyn Bryan, a newly married model who finds herself making friends with her husband's dying ex-wife. She appeared on Saturday Night Live in 1995 with musical guest Rancid.

Leighton accepted a six-episode job in Beverly Hills, 90210, after leaving Melrose Place at the end of her tenure in 1997. According to reports, Aaron Spelling portrayed aspiring actress Sophie Burns, and she earned six-figure per episode. Angels, Baby, she appeared in 1999 in the independent short film Angels, Baby! Jeff Fisher, as well as Paul Lazarus-directed romantic comedy Seven Girlfriends opposite Tim Daly, and the dramatic drama The Clean and Narrow opposite Jack Noseworthy, which was released direct to television in early 2000, was released direct to video.

Leighton appeared on Cupid and The Outer Limits in the 2000s and appeared in the animated film Duckman. She appeared in the indie film The Sky Is Falling with Dedee Pfeiffer and Eric Close before taking a break to have her son Jack Douglas. In 2003, she returned to the small screen in Skin for FOX, which was cancelled after three episodes, and in the short-lived 2005 ABC series Eyes.

She appeared on shows such as the ABC drama/comedy Miami Special Victims Unit, CSI: Miami and Shark, in 2006–07, after her FOX pilot Damages with Cole Hauser was not picked up, she made several prime-time guest appearances on ABC and Comety. Nora Flannery, a popular country and western singer, appeared in Lifetime's A Deadly Encounter as Joanne Sanders, a single mother who is the perpetrator of a stalker, and Love Notes as a woman on a job. Leighton appeared in the thriller The Burrowers directed by J.T. Petty and the Hallmark Channel's Daniel's Daughter opposite Sebastian Spence and Mending Fences, opposite Angie Dickinson.

Leighton will appear in the 2009 film Melrose Place, reprising her role as the alleged deceased Sydney Andrews, who will act as landlord at Melrose Place, on April 5, 2009. On The CW, the remake lasted just a single season before being scrapped. According to ABC Family, Leighton had been cast in a lead role in the TV series Pretty Little Liars, the television adaptation of Sara Shepard's book of the same name, as Ashley Marin, the mother of Hanna Marin, played by Ashley Benson, one of the show's four main characters. Leighton remained with Pretty Little Liars for seven seasons before the show's end in June 2017.

Leighton guest appeared on CBS medical drama Code Black as Sonya Finn, and then appeared in the Hallmark Christmas film Christmas on Honeysuckle Lane in 2018. In 2020, she appeared as Karen Scott on Los Angeles' Finest, and 2021 saw Leighton playing Corinne Simon in The CW's Dynasty. In the episode "The Big Five Oh" of the Fantasy Island sequel series, she appeared as Nettie.

Nearly 25 years after its iconic series finale, a Melrose Place sequel series is currently in development at CBS Studios. Heather Locklear (Amanda Woodward), Daphne Zuniga (Jo Reynolds) and Laura Leighton (Sydney Andrews) are all expected to return, via Deadline. The new series will hail from Insatiable creator Lauren Gussis, and will be set several years after the original series, which ran seven seasons from 1992 to 1999.
