Laura Michelle Kelly (born 4 March 1981) is an English actress and singer best known for her appearance in Mary Poppins in the musical of the same name and in the role of Sylvia in Finding Neverland on Broadway.
Early life
Kelly was born in Totton, Hampshire, and moved to a farm on the Isle of Wight with her family, her mother's birthplace, and the place where her father and mother first met. She attended primary, Solent Middle, and Sandown High.
In middle school, Bugsy Malone was her first musical appearance. Barbara Walter, a local singing instructor who performed Kelly in amateur productions at local theatres, including Shanklin Stagecoach of Performing Arts School, studied with her.
Personal life
In 2001, Kelly married choreographer Nick Winston. After seven years of marriage, they divorced. She married Sean Helleren in Maui, Hawaii, on January 24th. Raphael Benjamin Helleren, her son, was born on October 23rd.
She is the third of four children and the youngest of four siblings. She comes from a Christian family. She has said that her faith is a vital piece of her life, and that she prays before every performance. Career
Beauty and the Beast, Whistle Down the Wind as Swallow (2000) (with a 10-year-old Jessie J), Les Misérables as Eponine at the Palace Theatre (2001), Mamma Mia! Sophie at the Prince Edward Theatre (2002) and My Fair Lady as Eliza Doolittle at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane (2003). Hodel (2004), she made her Broadway debut in a revival of Fiddler on the Roof.
In September 2004, Mary Poppins premiered at the Bristol Hippodrome in September, then in December at the Prince Edward Theatre in the West End. Kelly's role as the title character received rave reviews as well as the 2005 Olivier Award for Best Actress in a Musical. After more than 400 appearances, she left Mary Poppins on October 29th, 2005, and Scarlett Strallen took over. Kelly went to Singapore in November 2005 to appear in A Twist of Fate, a Singapore Repertory Company product. Anthony Drewe (who co-wrote the songs with Singaporean composer Dick Lee) appeared in the film as well.
In 2006, she returned to London to appear in A Tribute to Dirty Dancing at Kenwood House and Marble Hill.
