James is best known for her performances in the popular stage musicals The Book of Mormon and Les Misérables, her role in the former having earned her a Tony Award.

Life and career

James was born to immigrant parents, a Vincentian father, and a Haitian mother who landed in New Jersey in search of the American dream. James grew up in Livingston, New Jersey, where she would graduate from Livingston High School. She sang and danced in church and in school performances as an infant. For her performance as Dolly Levi in high school, she was nominated for a Rising Star Award at Paper Mill Playhouse. She later attended the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University.

James appeared in The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, an ill-fated production, and in the New York City Center Encores, as Ottilie. House of Flowers is a flower arrangement that grows in the United States. She appeared in All Shook Up's Broadway production, Adela Alba, in Michael John LaChiusa's off-Broadway run.

James appeared in The Wiz revival at La Jolla Playhouse and has appeared in Romeo and Juliet, Caesar and Cleopatra at the Stratford Festival with Christopher Plummer. She received the 2011 Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Musical for her appearance in NabulungiIn in The Book of Mormon. She took a leave in June 2012 to film a screen version of Lucky Stiff during her tenure. She appeared in Éponine's Broadway revival from 2014 to January 2015.
