She appeared in Downton Abbey between 2010 and 2015, earning her international recognition. Carmichael says, "I don't know how it happened with Downton; it was a miracle." I believe it was because I had a good drama school on my CV, and they had trouble finding someone for Edith because she had to be quite different from the two other girls, Lady Mary and Lady Sybil. "I had a lot of wet, ingénue parts while attending drama school," the actress says, so I'm excited to play her." It's amazing how one role can make people see you differently."
Other television appearances include parts in The Heart of Thomas Hardy and The End of Our Street. She appeared in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy in 2011, and she appeared in Madame Bovary's 2014 film.
Carmichael appeared in the British black comedy feature film Burn, Burn, Burn, Burn, a coming-of-age story based on Jack Kerouac's "On the Road," which was released in 1957. Chanya Button's debut follows two girls, Seph (Carmichael) and Alex (Chloe Pirrie), who are on a road trip to follow Dan's instructions, who has died and given them directions on how to scatter their ashes. As the trip progresses, the ashes (stored in tupperware in the glove compartment) are decreasing in number. At the BFI London Film Festival in 2015, the film made its World premiere.
