Lance Thomas (born April 24, 1988) is an American professional basketball player who most recently competed for the New York Knicks of the National Basketball Association (NBA).

He played college basketball for the Duke University Blue Devils men's basketball team, where he started at power forward for the national champion 2010 team.

High school career

Thomas attended Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School in Scotch Plains, New Jersey, during his freshman and sophomore years. He attended St. Benedict's Preparatory School both in junior and senior years. During his senior year, he aided the school to two Prep A Division New Jersey State titles with a 56–3 record in his last two seasons, while still averaging 14.5 points and 6.5 rebounds per game. Thomas appeared at the USA Basketball Youth Development Festival in 2005, where he helped the Blue Team win the silver medal with a 3–1 record. He appeared in the 2006 McDonald's All-American game after his senior years.

Thomas, who was regarded as the No. 1 in the industry by Rivals.com, was regarded as the No. 1 in the No.. The No. 13 small forward and the No. 0 are among the No. Ones to watch. In 2006, the nation's 42 players made their national debut.

Thomas began playing for the Under-18 national team at FIBA Americas Under-18 Championships in 2006, where he helped the USA win the gold medal after committing to Duke University on April 5, 2006.

College career

Thomas averaged 4.0 points and 2.5 rebounds per game as a freshman, while shooting.568 from the field in 31 games (18 starts).

Thomas averaged 4.3 points and 3.3 rebounds in 18.5 minutes in 32 games (28 starts). He had a.505 field goal percentage and 12 rebounds at least 12 times, including eight of Duke's 16 ACC games.

Thomas' career high in points came on November 28, 2008, when he scored 21 against Duquesne. His latest career high beat his previous record of 15 points set on November 20, 2006. Thomas and All-American point guard Jon Scheyer were co-captains of Duke's team in their senior year. Thomas had a career-high 12 rebounds against NC State in January 2010. The eighth-ranked Blue Devils defeated North Carolina 64-5 on February 10, defeating them 64–54. Thomas suffered a serious bone bruise in his right knee early in the second half, causing him to miss the next game against Maryland.

Thomas was instrumental in Duke's winning the 2010 NCAA championship, their fourth since 2001. Duke defeated Butler and star swingman Gordon Hayward in the 2010 NCAA championship game. With 3.6 seconds left, the Bulldogs had a chance to win, but Hayward missed a half-court foul, giving Duke a 61–59 victory.

Thomas was named on the 2009–10 ACC All-Defensive Team for 2010 and finished his college basketball career ranked 10th on Duke's all-time list in offensive rebounds (255). He averaged 4.8 points and 4.9 rebounds in 25.3 minutes per game in 40 games (39 games) as a senior.

Professional career

Thomas appeared in the NBA Development League for the Austin Toros between November 2010 and December 2011. Thomas signed with the New Orleans Hornets for training camp on December 9, 2011. He was on the Hornets' roster for the 2011–12 NBA season, but he was eventually suspended by the team on December 31.

Thomas was reacquired by the Austin Toros on January 4, 2012. He was later selected to play in the 2012 NBA Development League All-Star Game. He averaged 13.4 points, 6.2 rebounds, and 1.3 assists per game in 65 games for Austin over the past two seasons.

Thomas was called up by the New Orleans Hornets on February 6, 2012, extending his one-day deal with the team. On February 16, he signed a second 10-day contract and a multi-year contract until February 27.

Thomas appeared in 59 games for the Hornets, averaging 2.5 points and 1.9 rebounds per game. In April 2013, the Hornets were renamed the New Orleans Pelicans.

Thomas was waived by the Pelicans on July 10, 2013. He re-signed with the Pelicans on August 22, but the team's only five games before being suspended on November 12. He averaged 3.6 points and 2.3 rebounds in 106 games for New Orleans over the three seasons.

Thomas stayed with the Foshan Drallion for the remainder of the 2013–14 CBA season on December 27, 2013. Foshan averaged 26.1 points, 10.8 rebounds, 1.0 assists, and 1.6 steals per game in 16 games.

Thomas signed with the Oklahoma City Thunder on September 29, 2014. "Lance is a hard worker," Thunder head coach Scott Brooks said of Thomas. He's a player who can play multiple positions. He has everything you need and that's what you want."

Thomas was traded to the New York Knicks in a three-team, six-player contract that also included the Thunder and the Cleveland Cavaliers on January 5, 2015. He had been waived by the Knicks two days earlier.

Thomas returned to the Knicks on a 10-day deal on January 10. On January 21, he signed his second 10-day contract, as well as a rest-of-season contract on January 31.

Thomas scored a career-high 24 points in a 106-89 loss to the Toronto Raptors on March 22, 2015.

Thomas re-signed with the Knicks on July 10, 2015. In a 107-99 loss to the Orlando Magic on December 21, 2015, he tied his career high of 24 points.

Thomas re-signed with the Knicks on July 8, 2016.

Thomas was named co-captain of the Knicks alongside Courtney Lee prior to the 2017-18 season.

The Knicks waived him on June 29, 2019.

Thomas signed with the Brooklyn Nets on September 27, 2019, but he was waived on October 18. Thomas was a replacement player for the Nets on July 14, 2020, as a backup.

National team career

Thomas was a member of the US national team that captured a bronze medal at the Pan American Games in 2011. Thomas was part of the 2012 USA Men's Select Team roster that competed against the 2012 USA Basketball Men's National Team in Las Vegas, Nevada, from July 6-12 training camp.
