Early life

Kyle Merritt McLachlan, a boy from Scotland, was born Kyle Merritt McLachlan (subsequently adjusting the spelling of his name to reflect his Scottish roots), at Yakima Valley Memorial Hospital in Yakima, Washington. Catherine (née Stone), a public relations manager for a school district and a homemaker who was active in community arts programs, was his mother. Kent Alan McLachlan (1933-2011), a stockbroker and solicitor, was his father. Kyle is descended on Scotch, Cornish, and German ancestry. He grew up in Yakima, the eldest of three boys. Craig and Kent Jr., his two younger brothers, live in the Seattle area. MacLachlan graduated from Eisenhower High School in Yakima. When he was 17, his father was exiled, and his parents divorced in his senior year of high school on October 12, 1977.

When MacLachlan became the head of a youth theater program for teenagers that she helped develop in Yakima, she was introduced to stage acting by his mother. She introduced him to piano lessons from the age of 9 to 14, when he then began to study classical singing. He appeared in plays and in class musicals while in high school, as well as in his first play at age 15. MacLachlan appeared in Brindsley Miller's one-act play Black Comedy in Peter Shaffer's one-act play Black Comedy and also appeared as Henry Higgins in My Fair Lady in his senior year. He received a BFA in drama from the University of Washington (UW) in 1982 as a member of the Professional Actor Training Program. He set out to major in commerce and also looked at classical voice at the University of Wisconsin, but then moved to acting.

Personal life

When his mother died of ovarian cancer in 1986, aged 53, just before Blue Velvet was released, MacLachlan was devastated. She had been diagnosed while filming Dune in 1983 and had been waiting for her to inform him of the condition. In 2011, his father died of post-surgery complications.

MacLachlan migrated to New York City because he was filming Sex and the City and Gruber were based there. They were married on April 20, 2002. Their son was born on July 25, 2008. He starred in three roles at the Old Lyric Repertory Theatre in Logan, Utah, and the Oregon Shakespeare Festival in Ashland, Oregon, in 1981.

In the role of Paul Atreides, MacLachlan made his film debut in Dune (1984). MacLachlan appeared in Molière's Tartuffe in a Seattle-area theater while still in college. Multiple people suggested MacLachlan because a casting agent for Dune producer Dino de Laurentiis was looking for a young actor to play in the film. He loved it after several screen tests and went on to win the role.

MacLachlan, who lost Dune and received poor feedback from critics, found it difficult to find jobs after it flopped and received poor feedback from critics. He moved to Los Angeles in 1985 and appeared in many films, including Top Gun, but he was unable to win any roles, eventually leaving his agent, Creative Artists Agency, behind him.

Lynch later performed MacLachlan in the starring role of Jeffrey Beaumont (1986), which was received more positively. In a 2012 interview, MacLachlan reflected on his long-term friendship with Lynch, adding, "David Lynch plucked me from obscurity." In Dune and Blue Velvet, he portrayed me as the lead, and many people have recognized me as this boy-next-door-cooking-something-weird-in-the-basement's ever since." Lynch's on-screen incarnation of Lynch's personal identity, according to Lynch biographer Chris Rodley.

Lloyd Gallagher, a former FBI agent, appeared in the 1987 science fiction action film The Hidden as FBI agent Lloyd Gallagher.

MacLachlan also appeared in the ABC television series Twin Peaks (1990–91), as Special Agent Dale Cooper, reprising his role in Lynch's 1992 prequel film Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me. Lynch spoke about those characters in a GQ article about MacLachlan: "Kyle plays innocents who are interested in life's mysteries." "He's the guy you can trust enough to venture into a strange world." Lynch was also considered by MacLachlan as one of his mentors with a "monumental effect" on him. Lynch, who is known to give his collaborators a great deal of autonomy over their roles as a result of his collaboration with him, rewrote scenes in Blue Velvet and Twin Peaks at MacLachlan's behest, claiming that his characters were not correct.

In Oliver Stone's 1991 film The Doors, MacLachlan played musician Ray Manzarek, who played the band of the same name. He had previously turned down Stone's invitation to star in the 1986 film Platoon, which ultimately went to Charlie Sheen. In 1991, he appeared in Tales from the Crypt as a murderer.

MacLachlan appeared in Paul Verhoeven's Showgirls in 1995. Critics blasted the film, and it received a record seven Golden Raspberry Awards. MacLachlan recalls that he first watched Showgirls for the first time before the premiere that he considered it "horrible." But he later discovered that the film was "inadvertently funny" and embraced for its campiness. Despite claims that he walked out, MacLachlan said he sat through the entire screening, even though he skipped the movie's press tour.

MacLachlan played Dr. Trey MacDougal, Charlotte York's one-time husband, from 2000 to 2002, portrayed him in the American television series Sex and the City. However, he appeared as a guest star in 2012 for season eight, the final season of Desperate Housewives. In season 6, 8, 8, 9 and 9 of How I Met Your Mother from 2010 to 2014, he also appeared as George "The Captain" Van Smoot. In 2022, he would reprise his role in the spinoff How I Met Your Father.

Has Halloween come early this year? It appears so, judging by the unseasonal onslaught of scary movies hitting cinemas. And, if you've already survived Alien : Romulus and Trap, brace yourself for more summer darkness with a reboot of The Crow (out today; mercifully no advance press screenings), next week's sci-fi horror AfrAId (likewise), plus British chiller Broken Bird, followed by folk horror Starve Acre and a Beetlejuice sequel that squeaks out just as school holidays end. After that, we'll all need a lie down in a nice, dark crypt.
