Early life and career

Frederick "Fred" and Joyce Coates were born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada. When attending the University of Saskatchewan, where he enrolled in a drama class as an elective, he first saw a play. He was inspired by this experience to pursue an acting career. Stanley Kowalski was portrayed by Coates in A Streetcar Named Desire and was the youngest to play Macbeth in his hometown Canada. In the 1986 film The Boy in Blue, Coates made his screen debut. He has appeared in over 100 titles to date, opening up new opportunities for him.

In 2018, he appeared in Johnny "Rooster" Byron's Outside the play Jerusalem by Jez Butterworth in March. At the 2018 Dora Awards, he received the Dora Mavor Moore Prize for Outstanding Achievement by a Male in a Principal Role – Play (Large Theatre).

Coates received the prize for Best Actor in a Continuing Leading Dramatic Role for his role as gangster Declan Gardiner in the television series Bad Blood, at the 7th Canadian Screen Awards.

Netflix fans have hailed a decade-old drama as the 'best show ever' after it was added to the streaming service. Viewers of the series took to Facebook group Netflix Bangers, which has more than three million members, to shower it with praise. Some guilty fans even admitted to rewatching the series 'many times' despite warning others to strap in for a  'gut-wrenching' finale.
