Early life
Sang-Young Shin was born in the United States on August 8, 1987, and he spent as a child in South Korea. His parents, who are divorced, also live in Chicago. His mother was unaware he did drag before he became well-known on television as of 2017. Before working as an art director and investigating sculpture, fashion design, and painting, Shin studied graphic design in college.
Career
In Chicago, Shin Shin began to perform in drag as Kim Chi. His drag name is a play on "Kimchi," the Korean national dish, and it is also a valid Korean female name ("Kim" is the surname, and "Chi" is the given name). "Kim Chi is a live action anime character whose fashion aesthetic could be described as 'bionic doily,' Shin described him.' My aura would be a slew of ultra violet colors that sparkles with glitter. "I love all things cute, exciting, weird, and exotic." Kim Chi befriended and helped season seven contestant Trixie Mattel find one of her first drag jobs in Chicago, as Mattel had trouble finding one in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, prior to joining RuPaul's Drag Race.
Kim Chi was one of twelve drag queens accepted for RuPaul's Drag Race's eighth season, which premiered on March 7, 2016. "She was the first Korean drag queen to be on American national television" after joining the program. Kim Chi won the first challenge, which came with a small cash reward. Shin gave the money to his mother, telling her that he made it through makeup work. Kim Chi made it to the top three along with Naomi Smalls, but Bob the Drag Queen took the crown. She lip synced "Fat, Fem, & Asian," a discussion on misconservative stereotypes in the gay dating market, during the finale.
Kim Chi collaborated with Sugarpill Cosmetics to produce different makeup pieces, including the Kim Chi Liquid Lip Color, a donut-scented lipstick with a subtle, unique combination of transparent aqua and violet sparkles, after Drag Race. The Kim Chi Electric Teal Eyeshadow was among other items on the Kim Chi Electric Teal Eyeshadow.
Kim Chi Chi released Kimchiji, a kim Chi emoji set. Emoji had a blast, a chicken wing, and a butt being spanked.
Kim Chi was invited to Loyola Marymount University's College of Communication and Fine Arts in March 2017 for an exhibition entitled "A Fabulous Evening With Kim Chi: Examining Gender Identity Through Drag." She was the first drag queen to attend the college and did so in full drag makeup. During the case, there was a question and answer session as well as a performance.
In April 2017, Kim Chi appeared at the Arizona State University West campus for their Asian Heritage Week and Pride Week. The Asian Pacific American Students' Union President Emily Kwon organized the function and invited Kim Chi to perform for the students.

A panel of judges from New York magazine selected her 17th as one of America's most influential drag queens in June 2019. Kim Chi Chichichi announced in September that she was designing her own cosmetics line in collaboration with Bespoke Beauty Brands, which was founded by Toni Ko, the maker of NYX Cosmetics.
She is one of Drag Race's most followed queens, with over 1.9 million Instagram followers as of October, 2021.
