Early life, family and education
Brooks was born in Pinhoe, southwest England, and was second of two brothers.
He received a scholarship to Exeter School, where he was estranged from the other students from better-off families and took solace in fantasy at the age of 11. He later studied psychology and philosophy at Aston University in Birmingham. When he was 20 years old, his father died.
Career
Martyn Pig, Brooks' debut novel, was published in 2003 by Chicken House, where it was edited by the company's founder, Barry Cunningham, OBE. They received the Branford Boase Award "for writers and editors," which annually honors a notable British book for young people by a first-time novelist.
