Career
Stanfield's first acting appearance appeared in the short film Short Term 12, Destin Daniel Cretton's thesis project at San Diego State University, which received the Jury Award for U.S. Short Filmmaking at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival. He appeared in the short film Gimme Grace (2010) a year later. While keeping his hopes of acting alive, he went on to work a variety of aspects, including roofing and landscaping, and a medical marijuana dispensary before being approached by Cretton to reappear in a short film adaptation of Short Term 12. It was his first film role. Stanfield also did method acting, distancing himself from the other cast members like his character during development. He was the first actor to appear in both short and long versions. At the 2013 South by Southwest film festival, Stanfield was nominated for the Independent Spirit Award for Best Supporting Male.
Stanfield appeared in The Purge: Anarchy and Selma in 2014. In the later playing civil rights activist Jimmie Lee Jackson, he co-starred. He appeared in the films Memoria and Miles Ahead in 2015.
