Acclaimed artist who did Obama White House portrait says man who accused him of sexual assault was consensual lover...as he shares their text exchanges

www.dailymail.co.uk, June 11, 2024
Kehinde Wiley, whose portrait of the former president sits in the Smithsonian, was accused last month of a 'severe and violent' sexual assault in 2021 by Ghanaian artist Joseph Awuah-Darko. Black Lives Matter co-founder Derrick Ingram has also stepped forward with allegations that he was raped during an abusive four-month relationship with Wiley in 2021. But the artist called the claims 'baseless and defamatory' as he posted messages from Awuah-Darko on Instagram. 'What is motivating these individuals to hurl these disgusting allegations? Money? Fame? An insatiable need for attention? Who knows?' he wrote.

The White House Unveils Barack and Michelle Obama's Official Portraits

www.popsugar.co.uk, September 8, 2022
Former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama were honoured with official portraits at an unveiling ceremony on Sept. 7 in the White House, as well as Sharon Sprung and Robert McCurdy, the artist behind the pair's likenesses. The Obamas' paintings are the first official portraits to be displayed to the White House Collection after then-President George W. Bush and former First Lady Laura Bush unveiled in 2012. The history-making paintings are also the first official White House portraits to include a Black president and first lady. Two official portraits are created for each president and first lady, according to White House tradition. "One set is created by and for the National Portrait Gallery, and the other set is funded by the White House Historical Association for the people's house," President of the White House Historical Association Stewart McLaurin said in a behind-the-scenes video. The Obamas' National Portrait Gallery portraits were unveiled back in 2018 and were created by Amy Sherald and Kehinde Wiley.

Trump's PAC donated $650,000 to Smithsonian to pay for paintings of him and Melania

www.dailymail.co.uk, August 23, 2022
Donald Trump's political action committee will pay for his and Melania Trump's portraits at the Smithsonian Institution, which will be funded by a $650,000 donation from the Smithsonian Institution. It's the first time a political group has sponsored a former president's portrait for the museum in recent memory. Private contributions are usually paid for the paintings. However, Trump's portrait would mainly be funded by contributions from his MAGA supporters, who aided him in his political campaigns.
