Life and career
Wayans was born in Harlem, New York City, son of Howell Stouten Wayans, a supermarket owner, and Elvira Alethia (Green), a homemaker and social worker. The paternal line tracing back to Madagascar was discovered on a genealogical TV show Finding Your Roots. His father was a devout Jehovah's Witness. The family later moved to Fulton, where he mainly grew up. He attended Seward Park High School in his youth years and later attended Tuskegee University on a science scholarship. He amused himself at college by inventing made-up stories about life in New York. He dropped out of school to concentrate on comedy one semester before graduation.
Wayans met Robert Townsend, who aided him in learning about the comedy industry during his first set at The Improv in New York. When Wayans moved to Los Angeles in 1980, Townsend and Wayans rode cross country to Los Angeles together. Wayans appeared on stage as an actor. On a television show titled For Love and Honor, he appeared as a soldier on a television series titled For Love and Honor. He appeared on Hill Street Blues as a popular NFL linebacker.
Townsend wrote, directed, and appeared in the film Hollywood Shuffle; Wayans was costar and cowriter. Because of the film's success, he was able to raise the funds to make I'm Gonna Git You Sucka. Wayans was approached by a Fox Broadcasting Company to have his own show. Wayans wanted to produce a variety show similar to Saturday Night Live, with a cast of people of color who took risks with its messages.
Wayans had a lot of freedom with the show, but Fox executives were a little worried about the show's content right before its television debut. Wayans wrote, produced, and appeared in the show, entitled In Living Color, a sketch comedy television series that first appeared on Fox Network from 1990 to 1994.
In a public service announcement of 2006 for the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, Wayans is a vegetarian and has promoted the diet.
