Katori Shingo Career

Career as a pop star

At age 10, Katori auditioned for Johnny & Associates, a Japanese talent company that recruits and develops young boys, preteens, to teens, to become singers and members of boy bands. In autumn 1987, five of the other band members auditioned individually from 1986 to 1989, resulting in a group called The Skate Boys, which was initially formed as backup dancers for a well-known boy band, Hikaru Genji. Producer Johnny Kitagawa selected six out of the twenty boys in April 1988 to form a new boy band and dubbed them "SMAP."

Katori's first solo album, "20200101," was released on January 1, 2020. The collection includes songs by Katori, as well as collaborations with artists including TeddyLoid, BiSH, Kreva, Kishidan, and Scha Dara Parr. The album is expected to be a year of the year 2020, with both the 2020 Summer Olympics and the 2020 Summer Paralympics scheduled to be held during the year. Katori's first solo concert, "Sakura Rekishi Aru Meijiza," was held in 2021 at the Meijiza from April 4, 2021, to April 29, 2021. On the streaming service AbemaTV, Katori also live streamed the last day of the festival.

"Tokyo SNG," Katori's second solo album, is set to be released on April 13, 2022. Katori wants to evoke the sensation of hearing "jazz in a tuxedo" inspired by many styles of jazz, from traditional style to big band jazz. To name a few, he contributed to the compilation's titles "Tokyo SNG," "Shingopation," and "Catharsis." The album also features collaborations with WONK, Atarashii Gakko, and the Zazen Boys.

Abunai Shonen III, his acting debut in a television series, was in 1988, as well as his bandmates. He has appeared in several high-rated television shows, including Hito ni Yasashiku (2002), Saiyuki (2006), and Bara no naya (2008). Katori starred in a segment titled, "Shingo Mama's Secret Breakfast" in which Katori will cross-dress into a woman named "Shingo Mama" and visit families to cook breakfast for children instead of their mother, allowing her to sleep in and rest in the morning. During the segment as his standard term, Katori began to use the term "Ohha," a pun for "good morning," a common word used among youth. The lovable character Shingo Mama, as well as the word "Ohha," have made it into a social phenomenon. SMAP has also welcomed kindergartners and preschoolers to their fan base as a result.

Katori issued "Shingo Mama's Oha Rock," a hit single on the charts with over 1,200,000 physical copies sold and became a social phenomenon on August 16, 2000. The trademark term "Ohha," used by Katori in December 2000, gained the Ryukougo Taisho, an annual event that honors the year's celebration. Shingo Mama promoted the use of Ohha as part of a Ministry of Education initiative to encourage family contact from 2000 to 2001.
