Personal life
Katie Herzig was born in California to a musical family. Her family moved to Fort Collins, Colorado, where she attended Rocky Mountain High School as she was one year old. Her sister performed opera in Operno. Herzig studied voice and played percussion in band and orchestra. She borrowed an acoustic guitar from her father in her senior year, which prompted her to try playing the instrument. She wrote her first song in poetry class at the University of Colorado Boulder. She trained in journalism and was interested in documentaries and video editing. She was attracted to audio editing after using Pro Tools and GarageBand, storing songs on her laptop in her bedroom.
Career
Herzig formed the band Newcomers Home in 1996 with Tim and Laurie Thornton and Andrew Jed. The music of Newcomers Home was a mash-up of bluegrass, folk, and pop. Herzig was terrified of stage fright and confined herself to playing backing vocals and playing the drums, but she began playing the guitar and became lead singer. The band disbanded in 2006, leaving Herzig free to pursue her solo career that she had started in 2004 when she first released her debut album Watch Them Fall.
Herzig also published Weightless two years ago. In comparison to her singing and songwriting, she made the album herself, recorded it at home, and played the majority of the instruments: electric and acoustic guitar, banjo, keys, and percussion. On the television show "One Tree Hill and Pretty Little Liars," is shown, while others are featured on Grey's Anatomy.
Apple Tree (2008), her second album, was more pop-oriented. In television dramas such as Bones, Grey's Anatomy, and Bored to Death, emotional songs such as "I Hurt Too" and "Wish You Well" were used. "Forevermore" appeared in a commercial, as did "Two Hearts Are Better Than One." In the film Going the Distance, she sang of "Hey Na Na" in 2010. In 2011, the Waking Sleep was first introduced. In a commercial for Saving Mr. Banks, "Lost and Found" appeared in the movie Family Weekend, as well as in a trailer for Craigslist Joe. The song "Lost and Found" was also used in a 2013 Carnival Cruise Line commercial titled "Moments That Matter." In the American teen/family drama television series Switched at Birth, "Best Day of Your Life" appeared.
She worked for "30 Songs/30 Days" in September 2012 to help Half the Sky: Turning Oppression Into Opportunities for Women Worldwide, a multi-platform media campaign based on Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn's book.
In the American horror film Unfriended, "I Hurt Too" was used in 2014.
"Say It Out Loud" was included in My Feet Keep Moving: Steps of Faith Foundation, an album that supports amputees.
