Asaf Avidan Career

Life and career

Asaf Avidan was born in Jerusalem on March 23, 1980, to diplomats for the Israeli Foreign Office. He spent four years of his childhood in Jamaica, attending The Priory School, and then grew up in New York. Avidan's grandparents immigrated from Romania to Israel. He completed compulsory army service in the Israel Defense Forces and studied animation at Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design in Jerusalem, winning an award at the Haifa Film Festival this year. Avidan then migrated to Tel Aviv and worked as an animator. After breaking up with his long-time girlfriend in 2006, he returned to Jerusalem to begin a music career, resulting in his debut and sole extended play (EP).

Avidan and Ran Nir decided to form a band, including Nir on bass guitar, Yoni Sheleg (Johnny Snow) on drums, Roi Peled on drums, Hadas Kleinman on guitar, and harmonica. Asaf Avidan & the Mojo Jive Cats' initial name was Asaf Avidan & the Mojo Jive Cats, but soon after, it was reduced to Asaf Avidan & the Mojos.

Asaf Avidan & the Mojos gained a lot of attention in Israel during 2006 and 2008, receiving recording requests from various local stores. However, the company's debut studio album The Reckoning was released in March 2008 independently, co-founding Telmavar Records with Avidan's brother Roie. The album was greeted with critical and commercial acclaim, winning Gold status in Israel. The Reckoning became one of the best-selling independently released books in the territory, with over 20,000 copies sold. Two singles, "Reckoning Song" and "Weak," as well as a tour around Europe, all helped. A remix of "Reckoning Song" by German disc jokey Wankelmut, which has been retitled to "One Day/ Reckoning Song," will see a lot of commercial success, winning gold and platinum awards in countries including Germany, Italy, and the Netherlands later this year. In 2012, the single's interest will result in The Reckoning's debut in numerous European countries.

Poor Boy / Lucky Man, the band's second album, was unveiled in Israel in September 2009 to critical praise. The band embarked on a world tour from 2009 to 2011, during which they appeared and performed on numerous occasions in Germany, France, China, and the United States. In the meantime, Asaf Avidan and the Mojos premiered their third and final record Through the Gale in November 2010. Avidan attributed their decision to an indefinite creative break; "they] wanted to try new sounds and different genres [they] couldn't do in [their] band because we were concerned with rock, blues, and folk." However, Avidan announced shortly that the group would disband due to his desire to pursue a solo career.

Avidan's debut "Different Pulses" was followed by his debut of his debut solo studio album of the same name in 2012. The singer embarked on a European tour, where he appeared at the 2013 San Francisco Music Festival in Italy. Different Pulses achieved success, climbing charts in a number of countries and receiving a Platinum award from France's Syndicat National de l'Édition Phonographique (SNEP). Gold Shadow (2015), the singer's follow-up album, was also very popular in Europe and gained Gold status in France. Several places, including in Boston, United States, were able to assist the album. In 2017, the Study on Falling appeared. Avidan appeared on the Bosnian musician Goran Bregovi's Three Letters from Sarajevo (2017) in the same year.

My heart is with the women of Iran fighting for their human rights. Being an Israeli talking about human rights abuse in Iran, I can already imagine the amount of backlash I will receive from every side of the political map. To all those - I say a big, grand fuck you. I’ve been talking to my Iranian fans hearing their stories from the streets of their homes. The fear and frustration in their words is something I can’t ignore. Anyone who has followed my page for a while will see that women rights are something I post about frequently- abortion laws in Poland, anti trump protests in LA , wade vs roe… A dark force in our history has been the violent and political subjugation of women in all parts of the world. The girls and women of any country deserve to have the same freedoms as men. That it needs to be said is maddening. Now the women of Iran are being suppressed, silenced and killed as they take the streets to cry for the fate of Mahsa Amini as a victim and as a symbol. The people I’ve spoke to have asked me to speak out on their behalf , as they are censored and silenced. There are videos circulating with practical actions anyone can take. Find them and help in the way you can. I know I have only what to lose by posting this post… but I won’t be silenced too in doing the bare minimum I can to help their cry for international support and hopefully pressure. Please leave your political views aside. Please leave your cynicism aside. These are women standing up to male oppression in the guise of religious doctrine. Yes. There are other causes to fight for. Yes, I’m an Israeli speaking on behalf of human rights for an “enemy state”. I’m aware of the apparent hypocrisy, and I’m aware of the backlash I will face. And I say again - fuck you, if you cannot see a just cause when there is one, and rather find excuses for inaction. Women of Iran - My heart and mind are with you . #mahsaamini aamini
