Julie Miller Career

Career

Julie Miller's first professionally released album was with the group Streetlight, which was made up of Julie, Buddy Miller, and Ron Krueger. In 1983, a self-titled album was released. Julie and Buddy wrote some songs for the album, including the first version of "Jesus in Your Eyes" (later re-recorded for Orphans and Angels). "How Could You Say No" (written by Mickey Cates) was first performed on this album and later included on Julie's solo debut Meet Julie Miller.

Julie's 1985 demo tape included eight songs but not 11. Two of these songs were later discovered on Meet Julie Miller, but the remaining nine songs were not reissued. "I Don't Need Anything Else" "I Don't Need Anything Else") "I Do Not Need," "I Want It," "I Want It Badly," "I Don't Want" "I Want to You," "I Wanna Be Ready") "I Want to You" ("Synth Pop Version with different lyrics), "My New Psychiatrist" (Synth Pop Version) "I Wanted" "I Want to You") Only one copy of this tape has gone to market; it's unknown if Julie used the tape to buy a record label or sold them at concerts.

Julie's musical career began after singer Sam Phillips forwarded her demo tape to colleagues at Myrrh Records. In 1990, Myrrh signed Miller to a deal, and she's debut of Meet Julie Miller (her first solo album) was released. Shawn Colvin, Victoria Williams, Amy Grant, Kelly Willard, and Russ Taff performed on this album.

He Walks Through Walls (1991) Miller's second solo album He Walks Through Walls (1991) featured backing vocals from Colvin, Williams, Grant, and Willard. Also contributed vocals, Mark Heard and Reverend Dan Smith. The original version of "Broken Things" was released on this album, which was later re-recorded. "All My Tears," she sang of Mark Heard's 1993 album Orphanages and Angels, included a duet with Emmylou Harris on "All My Tears," which was written after his death. Jimmy Scott, a jazz singer, also contributed vocals. "Treasure of the Broken Land" by Heard was also covered by Miller. Shawn Colvin was a vocalist once more. "S.O.S." was a song on YouTube. This album was released on Christian television and was a hit on Christian television.

Street Level Records' fourth solo album Invisible Girl was released. Julie wrote about "Can't Cry Hard Enough," a Williams Brothers song. Background vocals were provided by Victoria Williams, Mark Olson, and the Electrics. Julie Miller released Blue Pony (Hightone Records) in 1997, which featured contributions from Emmylou Harris, Buddy Miller, and Valerie Carter. "I Know Why The River Runs" and "All My Tears" are among her latest solo albums, as well as new songs "I Know Why The River Runs" and "I Still Cry" are among her most recent solo albums. Karen Peris of Innocence Missions performed "By Way of Sorrow" on Innocence Mission's Karen Peris.

Buddy & Julie Miller, the first Buddy and Julie Miller duo album, was released in 2001. In 2002, this album received the American Music Association award for best album. Love Snuck Up, a collection of the Millers' Hightone songs, was released in 2002. A Julie Miller collection is planned, with tracks from Julie's first four albums, which have been out of print for many years.

Julie made background vocals on Benny Hester's album Through the Window in 1987. Julie performed the title track on Cry of the Heart: Emily's Eyes in 1992, an album that was released to bring hope to victims of child violence victims. Julie said after a 2002 performance in Kentucky that one line of "Emily's Eyes" was edited out of it, indicating apprehension about the "implications" of the song. There were no further details given.

Julie and Buddy Miller of 1994 released Mark Heard's "Orphans of God," the title track for Mark Heard's "Strong Hand of Love" on the single CD Mark Heard Tribute album Strong Hand of Love. They also aided Victoria Williams on her version of "What Kind of Friend." Both songs were included on the two-CD Mark Heard Tribute Orphanages of God later this year, with "What kind of Friend" extending by nearly a full minute.

Julie's song "By Way of Sorrow" was a nod to Cameron Crowe's film Vanilla Sky, but it was not included in the film.

Many musicians have recorded songs arranged by Julie Miller, Julie Miller, and Buddy. For a comprehensive list, visit Buddy and Julie Miller's website. Juliet Turner, a local musician, performed a version of Miller's "Broken Things" at a memorial service for the bombing victims in Northern Ireland after the 1998 Omagh bombing.

In the 90s, Julie and Buddy Miller joined Victoria Williams, Mark Olson, and Jim Lauderdale for a European tour dubbed "The Rolling Creek Dippers."
