Julian Simmons Career

Broadcasting career

Simmons began his career in television productions in Belfast when he was working for Air Canada at their Belfast headquarters. In Julian, a documentary film made for Belfast's community television station NVTV), he said, "I know someone you should talk to" and that "You should be on TV, I know who you should talk to." So I sent my letter in and descended on Havelock House with amateur tapes of me performing in my kitchen, and bedroom, as well as sleeping... Well, I guess there are some funny ones here at the moment. Here's a news briefing, let's see that." Simmons was then given a six-week trial as an announcer at Ulster Television.

Simmons' first job involved reading news and sports bulletins as well as introducing the channel's shows, but he was uneasy with newsreading. "I had no idea what I was talking about." When I first started reading the news, I was concerned about making a mistake, but I was also worried that I was going to laugh." If I'm hearing bad news or someone else tells me something important, I'm starting to panic. So I was always worried that when I was reading the newspaper, I would be laughing."

Simmons, who began as a freelancer at the Havelock House Studios in Belfast, joined the station's presentation department as a volunteer in 1992, just before the station's major on-air rebrand from Ulster Television to UTV.

Simmons explains how his continuity duties evolved: "Continuity was pretty straight," he says, and then one Christmas, I was in for four or five days over the holiday season, all done up like a dog's dinner and a dickie bow; no news to read about this program. Evidently, it went down well. "I've decided to do weekends permanently: Friday/Saturday/Sunday primetime, where the shows are all entertainment; nothing difficult or heavy."

Simmons appeared on UTV Live and UTV Life in October 2006 to discuss upcoming storylines on Coronation Street and Emmerdale, the two main soap operas on television, between October 2006 and February 2009. He has also appeared on UTV Rewind and the travelogue Come Fly with Julian, both of which have been seen on television.

Simmons did not have programming on weekends until October 2016, mainly because of his link to Coronation Street, where he has described as his favorite program and refers to recent story updates on the station. When addressing his Coronation Street debuts, he says, "I [hear] people say on trains and buses...people talk about the soaps as if it's happening to real people."

"But now on the TV," was usually heard when introducing episodes of Coronation Street. Simmons' 'Santa Flash' announcements on Christmas Eve, where he gave his own account of Santa Claus' journey from the North Pole, first announcing that he would land in Ireland first.

Simmons made his last regular in-vision announcement at 11.15 p.m. on Sunday, when UTV's presentation and playout services from Belfast to Chiswick coincided with the removal of UTV's presentation and playout services. Simmons was retained as both an out-of-vision announcer and a relief weather presenter.

Because of the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on employees at the station's Belfast studios, UTV dropped local continuity in April 2020, first as a temporary measure. Simmons resigned from UTV after a decision to change permanently to an ITV network presentation on November 26, 2020.

Simmons was expected to be one of the longest-serving continuity announcers on any television network in the United Kingdom and Ireland at his time, as well as the longest-serving announcer on the ITV network.
