Fred Newman Career

Career

Newsweek covered Newman's first job in New York City. After doing comedy, Newman quickly capitalized on his unique vocal abilities, and Peter Workman (Workman Publishing) signed Fred to write the best-selling book MouthSounds (first released in 1980 with a vinyl record insert and reprinted with a CD in 2004). On Garrison Keillor's live radio show A Prairie Home Companion, Newman appeared as an actor and sound effects artist. Keillor addresses an apparently impromptu tale that is amusing because it requires Newman to strain to provide rapid-fire sound effects for unusual occurrences and obscure animals, which is an audience favorite feature of the program.

On CBS Sunday Morning, Newman was featured in an interview with Jane Pauley, and the segment was nominated for an Emmy.

He has also performed character voices and sound effects in several film, television, and video game credits, including "Who Framed Roger Rabbit," as a special guest on the episode "Mouths" (2004), Wolf and Men in Black, as well as other characters.

In the early 1980s, Newman hosted Livewire, a children's talk show on Nickelodeon. Livewire was known for presenting bands with their first television appearance, including R.E.M. Split Enz. Nick or Treat, Nickelodeon's Halloween TV special game, had him as a host.

In the 1980s, Newman appeared in Muppet Magazine and later as the editor of Muppet Show On Tour's Live Show. Newman appeared in Henson's CBS sitcom pilot Puppetman in 1987. Neat Stuff to Know and Do, a 1988 Henson direct-to-video special entitled Neat Stuff to Know & Do.

Newman was chosen as the voice of Garry Trudeau's comedic strip character Duke, who ran for president before the 2000 presidential election. He did both voice and motion capture for Duke 2000, a series of online computer animated shorts, and the "Ask Duke" interactive game can be seen. For a NetAid concert, he was also the voice of Trudeau's Jimmy Thudpucker.

He appeared on-camera (1989–1993) (with Mowava Pryor or Terri Eoff Misner as the other co-host) that launched Britney Spears, Keri Russell, Justin Timberlake, Christina Aguilera, JC Chasez, and Ryan Gosling among others. On PBS' Between the Lions, for which he also writes and hosts animated voices, and PBS' Lomax, the Hound of Music, Newman can be seen as the conductor on PBS' Lomax, the Hound of Music. Between the Lions and the Sea was a writer who wrote two Emmy Awards. Doug, PB&J Otter, Stanley, and Stanley have created music for Doug's 1st Movie as a musician. In 2015, he appeared on Randy Cunningham, 9th Grade Ninja, as a guest.

Chrysopylae, a symphony conducted by the Marin Symphony Orchestra on the 75th anniversary of the Golden Gate Bridge, was written by composer Rob Kapilow with Newman, who was also the sound effects designer for the Golden Gate Opus. The world premiere took place on May 6, 2012 at the Main Veterans' Memorial Auditorium in Marin County, California, on May 6, 2012.
