Career

Maggie May (1966), Mame (1969), and Company (1971) are among McKenzie's early West End musical credits. She appeared on the West End revue Side by Sondheim in 1976 and made her Broadway debut in 1977 when the show debuted in New York, winning a Tony Award nomination for Best Featured Actress in a Musical. She has also been nominated for a Drama Desk Award. She received the first of two Olivier Awards for Best Actress in a Musical in 1982, when she appeared in Miss Adelaide in Guys and Dolls' 1982 West End revival.

McKenzie received the Evening Standard Award for Best Actress for her role in the Alan Ayckbourn play Woman in Mind, 1986. She went on to appear in the original West End productions of two Sondheim musicals, appearing Sally in Follies at the Shaftesbury Theatre in 1987 and The Witch in Into the Woods at the Phoenix Theatre in 1990. She continued to work with Stephen Sondheim as Mrs Lovett in the 1993 London revival of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. In 1994, she received her second Olivier Award.

McKenzie performed in a National Theatre 80th birthday tribute to Lord Olivier, Sir Larry, on the 31st of May 1987 in the presence of Olivier himself.

McKenzie's early television appearances include Maggie and Her (1978–1979), as well as Irene Handl and That Beryl Marston. Gareth Hunt (1981): a family with Gareth Hunt. She rose to fame with British viewers as Hester, opposite Anton Rodgers in the 1980s sitcom Fresh Fields and its 1990s sequel French Fields, for which she was voted TV Times Favorite Female Comedy Performance for five years in a row. In an episode of Midsomer Murders, she appeared as Mrs Forthby in Blott on the Landscape and as a villager involved in a string of murders. When Eamonn Andrews surprised her outside the Royalty Theatre in London in 1981, she was the subject of This Is Your Life.

In the ITV comedy You Can Choose Your Friends, she was reunited with Anton Rodgers (again as a husband and wife team). Mrs. Forrester, a military widow of slender means, was co-starred by Michael Gambon and Judi Dench in the BBC One costume drama series Cranford in 2007.

Miss Marple, ITV's Miss Marple, was named as the replacement for Geraldine McEwan in 2008. "It's difficult because Agatha Christie wrote her in two ways," she said. McKenzie's first Marple series included A Pocket Full of Rye, Murder Is Simple, They Do It With Mirrors, and Why Didn't They Ask Evans? The Pale Horse, The Secret of Chimneys, The Blue Geranium, and The Mirror Cracked from Side to Side were among the show's second series, which aired in 2010. In September 2012, a sixth series starring adaptations of A Caribbean Mystery, Greenshaw's Folly and Endless Night, premiered in 2013.

Betty Nicholas appeared in the ITV television series The Town in 2012.

McKenzie appeared in David Walliams' film adaptation of Gangsta Granny on December 26, 2013. McKenzie appeared as Shirley Mollison in BBC miniseries The Casual Vacancy in February 2015.

Instead of giving too many'male-skewing' suggestions, Radio 4 chiefs have told program designers that they must come up with more comedy shows led by women. Julia McKenzie, the commissioning editor for comedy and entertainment, has urged producers to 'consider the gender balance' and aim for a'mixed slate.' Her remarks follow previous complaints that men have dominated television comedy. In 2014, its television company agreed not to air all-male comedy panel shows.
