JP Pietersen Career

Youth and early career

Pietersen was educated at Horton College in Witbank, but he made his provincial debut with the Sharks as a 19-year-old during the 2005 Currie Cup season. His 2006 Super 14 season was plagued by injuries, but despite this, he was still playing in the South African under-21 team in the 2006 Under 21 Rugby World Championship. South Africa reached the final but France defeated them.

International career

He was named in the Springboks' 2006 Tri Nations Series squad, where he debuted against New Zealand at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium in Rustenburg, South Africa, after the under-21 World Championship.

Pietersen's deceptive speed and gliding runs make him a volatile back-line player with the ability to break the line at will and create attacking opportunities for his team. He is also a clinical finisher and was the top try scorer in the 2007 Super 14 tournament with 12 tries from 15 games. Pietersen remains a firm fan favourite due to the team's dynamic and exciting nature. Pietersen was seen as the ideal replacement for Percy Montgomery as fullback before his return to the Sharks, but Pietersen concentrated on wing as his primary position, and it was in this role that the bulk of his appearances were made for club and country.

He was selected to the Springboks 2007 Rugby World Cup squad. Pietersen scored three tries in the first two matches. In the game against England, he was unstoppable, scoring two tries and setting up a third.

Both AJ Venter and Stefan Terblanche in the October 2008 edition of SA Sports Illustrated that the top try-scoring in the 2007 Super 14 failed to score even one in 2008, an achievement that was not acknowledged by both AJ Venter and Stefan Terblanche in the October 2008 edition of SA Sports Illustrated.

However, post World Cup Pietersen went on to establish the most capped wing pairing in Springbok history with Bryan Habana, who currently stands at 25 tests, ten more than next best, James Small and Jaques Olivier. Pietersen is best known for his impressive defense, other than his apparent attacking skills. His cover defense was the saving grace of the Springbok's 2008 End of Year Tour, largely keeping the Welsh at bay and dominating Shane Williams' role. His all-round abilities remain to be among the highest in the South African region's return to international sport, morphing into one of the best wings since the country's remission to international sports.

Pietersen was named up for South Africa's 2011 Rugby World Cup bid, beginning with a 17–16 victory over Wales in the first game of the Springboks. South Africa defeated Fiji 49-3 with Pietersen, this time playing on the left wing. When South Africa defeated Namibia 87-0, Pietersen did not play. South Africa pushed past Samoa 13–5, and he got to the right wing once more. South Africa was then progressed to the quarter-finals of the world cup. South Africa was then knocked out of the tournament after losing 11-09 to Australia. In the 2015 world cup, he has scored four times.

In April 2013, it was revealed that he would compete for Panasonic Wild Knights in the 2013–14 Top League in Japan, implying that he would not be able to participate in the Sharks' 2013 Currie Cup Premier Division campaign but that the Sharks would return to the Sharks in 2014 Super Rugby season.

Pietersen has signed a three-year contract with Leicester Tigers in England before the 2016-2017 season. However, Pieterson was released early from Welford Road to join Toulon in the Top 14 from the 2017-18 season as of June 20th.
