Jojo Moyes Career

Life and early career

Pauline Sara-Jo Moyes was born in Maidstone, England, on August 4th, 1969.

Moyes served in various capacities before attending university: she was a typist at NatWest, a brochure writer for Club 18-30, and a minicab controller for a short period. Moyes worked with the Egham and Staines News as an undergraduate at the University of London.

She earned a journalism degree from City University as well as a Bachelor degree from Royal Holloway and Bedford New College, London University.

In 1992, Moyes was granted a bursary by The Independent newspaper, which enabled her to attend the postgraduate newspaper journalism course at City University. She has been with The Independent for ten years (except for one year while working in Hong Kong for the Sunday Morning Post) before becoming Assistant News Editor in 1998. Arts and Media Correspondent, a publication from 2002, she became the newspaper's Arts and Media Correspondent.

Writing career

Moyes wrote three manuscripts that were all rejected early in her writing career. With one child, another baby on the way, and a career as a journalist, Moyes promised that if her fourth book was rejected, she would abandon her attempts. Six of them began bidding for the rights after submitting the first three chapters of her fourth book to various publishers, six of whom lost.

When Moyes' first book Sheltering Rain was published in 2002, she became a full-time novelist. She continues to write for The Daily Telegraph.

Hodder & Stoughton, Moyes' publisher, did not take up the 2012 book Me Before You, and Moyes sold it to Penguin. Its six million copies, rose to the top of nine countries, and resurrected her back catalog, with three of her books landed on the New York Times bestseller list at the same time. In 2015 and Still Me in 2018, Moyes would write two sequels to Me Before You: After You in 2015 and Still Me in 2018.

In 2013, Michael H. Weber and Scott Neustadter had been hired to write a Me Before You adaptation. The film adaptation Me Before You was released in 2016 and Moyes wrote the screenplay.

Moyes invested £120,000 in the Quick Reads Initiative, an adult literacy initiative in 2018. The initiative received three additional years of funding as a result of her investment. Her book, Paris for One and Other Stories, is part of the 2015 Quick Reads collection, and she contributed a short story to A Fresh Start, part of the 2020 Quick Reads collection.

Alice Winn's debut novel In Memoriam review: Why the poignant notices in her alma mater's archive were the key to its success

I went for breakfast with a book publisher a year or two ago. She told me - confidently, with a smile - that a book would be published that was going to be huge.

Author Patricia Nicol reveals a selection of the best books on: Spring cleaning

www.dailymail.co.uk, April 16, 2023
My family is about a decade behind on all clear-outs, and I am not sure why. A neighbor was looking for baby phenalia for an international visitor the other day. Despite the youngest member of our household's household having just turned 12, we were able to provide a stairgate. I need to start looking at my house as a stranger: clock the outgrown art works, stationery, and toys, and insist on a stringent resettlement policy.
