Mitchell has a stammer and considers The King's Speech (2010) to be one of the most accurate depictions of what it is like to be a stammerer: "I'd obviously be avoiding the issue today if I hadn't outed myself by writing a semi-autobiographical book narrated by a stammering 13-year-old" is one of the most accurate portrayals of what it is like to be a stammer Mitchell is also a member of the British Stammering Association.

Mitchell's son is autistic. Naoki Higashida, a 13-year-old Japanese autistic boy, was translated by him and his wife Yoshida in 2013. Higashida is said to have learned to communicate using the discredited methods of enabled communication and rapid prompting techniques. Mitchell and his wife translated the sequel to Higashida, which was also attributed to Higashida. Message from the Silence of Autism.
