Johnny Grant Career

Early life and career

Grant was born in Goldsboro, North Carolina. He made his show business debut on radio in 1939 as a local newscaster. According to sources distributed at the third annual Hollywood Film Festival in 1999, there was no such thing as a publicity stunt.

During World War II, Grant served in the Army Air Corps, and he was in charge of a servicemen and woman radio show in New York City. He talked to many entertainment stars who were in the city during this period. Since being fired from service, he remained in New York, working as a reporter for station WINS.

Grant appeared on Los Angeles radio stations KGIL (1949–50) and KMPC (1951–59), having migrated to California. Grant co-hosted the first national telethon ever produced, as a fundraiser to help bring America's athletes to the Helsinki Olympics in 1952. He appeared in several films in the 1950s, often portraying uncredited fictional hosts. In the 1954 film White Christmas and the Master of Ceremonies, he appeared in the 1956 film The Girl Can't Help It.
