John M. Slattery Jr. (born August 13, 1962) is an American actor and producer best known for his role as Roger Sterling in the AMC drama series Mad Men.
Slattery's other acting credits include a lead role in the Best Picture-winning film Spotlight, and Howard Stark's role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe films Iron Man 2, Ant-Man, Civil War, and Avengers: Endgame.
He has been nominated for four Primetime Emmy Awards and two Critics' Choice Television Awards for Mad Men, as well as two SAG Awards for Mad Men. Slattery produced God's Pocket (2014), his first feature film co-written with Alex Metcalf in 2013.
The film, based on Pete Dexter's 1983 book of the same name, premiered at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival and was picked up for release by IFC Films.
Early life
Joan Slattery, a retired accountant, and John "Jack" Slattery, a leather merchant, were born in Boston, Massachusetts. He is one of six children. As a youth, he dreamed of being a baseball player.
Slattery is of Irish descent and was raised Catholic. He attended Saint Sebastian's School in Newton, Massachusetts (since moving to Needham, Massachusetts), and received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from The Catholic University of America in 1984.
Personal life
Talia Balsam, a film actress who also appeared in Mad Men, married him in 1998; they have one son together. They live in SoHo, Manhattan.
Career
Slattery has served in roles including Mad Men; television producer Al Kahn on Homefront; and HBO's Idy Will Truman's brother Sam on Judging Amy; and college president Peter Benedict on Jack and Bobby. He began a series of appearances on Desperate Housewives portraying Victor Lang, Gabrielle Solis' (Eva Longoria) second husband, until his character's death in Season 4. Slattery won a faux commercial advertising gold on The Colbert Report in December 2009.
In the film Mona Lisa Smile, Slattery played Paul Moore, the boyfriend of Katherine Watson (portrayed by Julia Roberts), and he portrayed Howie in David Lindsay-Abaire's play Rabbit Hole. In the film Sleepers, he appeared as a tutor. In Charlie Wilson's War, he served as a government promoter in the Clint Eastwood feature Flags of Our Fathers and as CIA official Henry Cravely. In Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights, Bert Miller, father of the leading female role, was cast, and Richardson, a mid-level agent in the Bureau's enigmatic intelligence service, was played as Richardson, father of the Bureau. Slattery played journalist Ben Bradlee Jr. in the Academy Award-winning, Golden Globe-nominated drama film Spotlight, and he also appeared in Netflix's comedy film Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp, for which he was nominated for Best Guest Performer in a Comedy Series.
