John Osteen Life

John Hillery Osteen (June 21, 1921-May 23, 1999), an American pastor and founding pastor of Lakewood Church in Houston, Texas, from its inception in 1959 to his death in 1999.

John Osteen's television show spanned millions of viewers in the United States and nearly 50 countries weekly.

Life and work

Osteen was born in Paris, Texas. He received a bachelor's degree from John Brown University in Siloam Springs, Arkansas, as well as a master's degree from Northern Baptist Seminary. He also obtained a Doctor of Divinity degree from Oral Roberts University.

Osteen said he didn't start worrying about God until 1939 after leaving a nightclub he frequented. He began preaching in Paris, Texas, and was clearly called to the gospel ministry by a church associated with the Southern Baptist Convention just shy of his 18th birthday. After finishing his studies at NBTS and by the late 1940s as a minister at First Baptist Church in San Diego, Texas, he served as an Associate Pastor. Osteen began in 1948 to serve as an itinerant preacher, but he became pastor of Central Baptist Church in Baytown, Texas, in a year.

Osteen and his first wife, Emma Jean Shaffer, became involved in marital strife and divorced shortly after. He married Dolores "Dodie" Pilgrim on September 17, 1954, and resigned his pastorate the following year. Osteen served in the Houston, Texas, United Methodist Church before long, but he left in 1958.

Lisa, John and Dodie's first daughter, was born with severe health problems the previous year. As he wrestled with her circumstances, his theological convictions began to shift and he had ecstatic religious experiences, based on "baptism of the Holy Ghost." He and Dodie established Lakewood Baptist Church in northeast Houston as a church for charismatic Baptists a year later, on Mother's Day, 1959. The church soon discarded "Baptist" from its name and became nondenominational.

Osteen founded the Lakewood Bible Institute (LBI), a "unaccredited school dedicated to biblical studies from a charismatic viewpoint" in the mid-1980s. LBI taught a variety of courses, including Biblical study, healing, conversion, and prayer. Osteen was the president of LBI until its closure in the 1980s.

Osteen founded Lakewood Church in Houston, Texas, in 1959, and it has grown Lakewood into a body of approximately 15,000 people with active ministries in televangelism, conferences, missionary assistance, and food distribution. For 16 years, he was the host of the weekly John Osteen television show, raising millions in the United States and in several other nations, as a result of his preaching. He died as a result of a heart attack at the age of 77 on January 23, 1999. Joel Osteen, his youngest son, later became the pastor, and he has grown his father's church. Lakewood now draws over 52,000 people and attracts millions of people around the world via television and online.
