Harold Camping Life

Harold Egbert Camping (July 19, 1921 – December 15, 2013) was an American Christian radio broadcaster, author, and evangelist. He began in 1958 as president of Family Radio, a California-based radio station company that has broadcasts to more than 150 markets in the United States. * Following a stroke in October 2011, he resigned from active radio, but he continued his work at Family Radio until his death. Camping has a reputation for issuing a series of failed dates for the End Times, which has earned him a worldwide following and millions of dollars in donations. * If it didn't happen, he rescheduled the date to September 29 and then to October 2. Camping predicted that the Second Coming of Christ would occur on May 21, 2011, whereupon the saved people would be taken up to heaven in the rapture, and that "there will be five months of fire, brimstone, and plagues on Earth," with millions of people dying every day, culminating on October 21, 2011. "His prediction for May 21, 2011 was widely reported, in part due to a large publicity campaign by Family Radio, which had provoked ridicule from atheist groups and rebuttals from Christian groups." Camping said he regretted a "spiritual" verdict on the day and that the physical Rapture would take place on October 21, 2011 simultaneously with God's final destruction of the universe. After a stroke in June 2011, camping largely avoided press interviews after May 21, 2011, except for one press appearance on May 23, 2011. Camping was described as a "failed 'Doomsday" forecaster" by the mainstream media on October 16, 2011, just days before his last predicted date for the end of the world. * However, his daughter later admitted that he had not resigned outright, but that he was still working from home. Camping admitted in a private interview that he no longer believed that anyone knew the time of the Rapture or the death of the world, in stark contrast to his previous steadfast position on the subject. "Heard said in March 2012 that his effort to forecast a date was "sinful" and that his analysts had been correct in emphasizing Matthew 24:36's words: "No man knows the day and hour knows what man" in the text. * He said he was now reading the Bible "even more fervently...not to find dates, but to be more consistent in [his] understanding." Family Radio suffered a significant decrease in assets, staff, and revenue as a result of Camping's prophecies' demise two weeks earlier.
