Early life
Calderazzo was born in New Rochelle, New York. He began studying classical piano at the age of 8. Gene's brother, Gene, had piqued his interest in jazz. He studied with Richard Beirach and continued his studies at Berklee College of Music and the Manhattan School of Music in the 1980s. He was also playing professionally with David Liebman and Frank Foster at the same time.
Later life and career
Michael Brecker, a saxophonist, met him at a music clinic and became a part of his quintet in 1987. He signed with Blue Note Records in 1990. Jerry Bergonzi and Branford Marsalis, his brother's roommate in Boston, appeared on Calderazzo's first album, In the Door. Dave Holland and Jack DeJohnette appeared on his second album, To Know One.
Calderazzo appeared on Brecker's Album Tales from the Hudson and Two Blocks from the Edge as pianist and composer. He was a keyboardist in Marsalis' Buckshot LeFonque and contributed to his album Music Evolution. Calderazzo assumed his position in the Branford Marsalis Quartet when pianist Kenny Kirkland died in 1998. Joey Calderazzo with John Patitucci and Jeff 'Tain' Watts was recorded in 1999. He appeared on Marsalis' albums Contemporary Jazz, Footsteps of Our Fathers, Romare Bearden Revealed, Eternal, and on Coltrane's 'A Love Supreme' Live in Amsterdam. "Hope" by Calderazzo appears on Braggtown.
Branford Marsalis owned him as one of the first musicians to sign with Marsalis Music. Haiku's first solo album was released in 2002. Claudia Acua and guitarist Romero Lubambo were among his tracks on Amanacer's album. He and Marsalis formed a duo and released Songs of Mirth and Melancholy in 2011.
