Joe Johnston Career

Career

Much of Johnston's film career was based on both design and special effects. He began his career as a concept artist and effects technician on the first Star Wars film, directed by George Lucas, and was art director on one of the Jedi's effects teams. Lucas's relationship with him would later prove fruitful, as he became one of four people to receive an Academy Award for Best Visual Effects for Lucas and Steven Spielberg's film Raiders of the Lost Ark. As an effects specialist, Johnston continued to work on numerous films.

He was also a producer on fantasy Willow and a production designer on two mid-80s TV films starring the Ewoks seen in Return of the Jedi.

Johnston is also the author of The Adventures of Teebo: A Tale of Magic and Suspense, which is related to Return of the Jedi (New York: Random House, 1984; ISBN 0-394-96568-5).

Lucas gave Johnston a sabbatical, as well as paying his tuition to attend the USC School of Cinematic Arts in 1984. After a year, Johnston said he was told not to return because he "broke too many laws."

In 1989, Johnston made his directorial debut with hit comedy adventure Honey, I Shrunk the Kids starring Rick Moranis. With the comic-book adaptation The Rocketeer (1991): He followed it. The film, as well as his predecessor, the animated and live action The Pagemaster, starring Macaulay Culkin, was a commercial failure. Johnston recovered from his injury to direct Jumanji, starring Robin Williams. The film soared from mediocre reviews to a grossing of over $260 million.

Johnston had intended to command Hulk but he was forced to withdraw in July 1997. Johnston converted from effects-driven action films to the more personal October Sky (1999), starring a teenager Jake Gyllenhaal of West Virginia high school who wants to be a rocket scientist for NASA against his father's wishes.

The sequel Jurassic Park III, Johnston's first project of the 2000s, cost the box office over US$300 million. Viggo Mortensen appeared in Johnston's western Hidalgo. Johnston took a six-year creative break before deciding on the 2010 revival of 1941 horror classic The Wolfman on a month's notice. Benicio del Toro and Anthony Hopkins appeared in the film shot in England.

In part thanks to his involvement with the period superhero film The Rocketeer, Johnston was chosen to direct a Marvel Studios superhero adaptation titled Captain America: The First Avenger. Chris Evans stars in the film's debut on July 22, 2011 as the comic book hero and Hugo Weaving as his archenemy the Red Skull. In 2012, Johnston directed the thriller Not Safe for Work for Blumhouse Productions.

Due to the film's director Lasse Hallström's inability, Johnston will shoot 32 days on the film The Nutcracker and the Four Realms on December 12, 2017.

Joe Johnston was reported in talks with Disney to direct Shrunk, a tribute to Honey, on December 5, 2019. I Shrunk The Kids. On February 5, 2020, the first official announcement of his appointment as director was made.
