Joan Snyder Life

Joan Snyder, (born April 16, 1940), is an American painter from New York.

She is a National Endowment for the Artists Fellow, a Guggenheim Fellow, and a MacArthur Fellow. Snyder's gestural and elegant "stroke paintings" series, which used the grid to deconstruct and retell the tale of abstract painting, attracted public interest in the early 1970s.

Snyder had abandoned the grid's formality by the late seventies.

As the paintings took on a more complex structure, she began more explicitly including symbols and text.

These early works were included in the 1973 and 1981 Whitney Biennials, as well as the 1975 Correspondent Biennial. "Ms. Snyder's art, first and foremost, is to advance the art of painting and investigate the most important aspects of the human body; to connect us not only to one another and nature but also to ancient rites and myths."

We're reminded that no matter how modern and civilized we are, art can also be raw, primitive, and talismanic.

Ms. Snyder's work awakenes all of the things that are still wild inside us without apology or decorum." Lance Esplund, a Wall Street Journal article Snyder's paintings are narratives of both personal and communal experiences. Snyder's paintings are often referred to as an autobiographical or confessional artist.

Snyder has extended abstract painting's expressive range by taking a strong individual approach and continuing experimentation with technique and materials, delighting generations of emerging artists.

A mother in Brooklyn is suing former New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio after she tripped on an uneven sidewalk outside his Park Slope home and knocked out four dental crowns from her mouth. Carole Kolb-King, 69, was suing de Blasio and his partner, Chirlane McCray, last week after she was injured while walking to the post office in June. The 69-year-old was walking her way to mail a check to her nephew from her Windsor Terrace home when her foot became trapped in the hole outside the de Blasio's 11th street home.
