Aminah Robinson Life

Aminah Brenda Lynn Robinson (February 18, 1940 – May 22, 2015) was an American artist.

Early life and education

Robinson was born in Columbus, Ohio, on February 18, 1940, to Leroy Edward Robinson and Helen Elizabeth Zimmerman-Robinson. She was born in Poindexter Village, one of the country's first federally funded metropolitan housing developments. The village was "replete with Black cultural traditions, including storytelling, reverence for elders, and encouragement of creativity." At an early age, Black history was passed down to her, and she was eager to share them with her families and the world. Aunt Annie, formerly an enslaved person, warned Robinson of the cruel system of slavery.

Robinson's identity was largely influenced by his family. Leroy Robinson and Helen Zimmerman-Robinson, both artists, heavily influenced her. Her father encouraged her to draw from the age of 3 and gave her opportunities to learn about her family's roots in the neighborhood. He insisted that she listen to music, read literature, and create art every day. Her father taught her how to work with raw materials and scrap fabric, in particular, the old-fashioned methods of rabbit-skin glue and several shades of natural pigments. He also taught her his own creation of HawgMawg, a mud-like substance that she often incorporates into her art. Her mother taught her how to sew and weave. The combination of these skills and materials allowed her to create depth and layers in her art.

Art was Robinson's "first outlet of expression"; she didn't start speaking until she was 5 or 6, and then her only form of communication was drawing. Robinson was also deeply involved in "transforming and recording [her] people's life into works of art at 9 years old," and since then she has dedicated her life to it. To hold the information that fuelled her work, she began sketchbooks, journals, and drawings.

Robinson completed her formal art education at the Columbus Art School (now the Columbus College of Art and Design) from 1957 to 1960. She continued to live and work in Columbus. At Ohio State University (1960 to 1963), Franklin University, and Columbus' Bliss College were among the students who studied art history and philosophy.

She bought a house on Columbus' East Side in 1974, which would later become her studio.

Personal life

Robinson married Clarence Robinson in 1964, later splitting in 1971. They had a son, Sydney, who died by suicide in 1994.
