Jessica Ruth Mueller (born February 20, 1983) is an American actress and singer.

She began her acting career in Chicago and received the Joseph Jefferson Award in 2008 for her role as Carrie Pipperidge in Carousel.

She travelled to New York City in 2011 to perform on On a Clear Day You Can See Forever, a Tony Award-winning film.

Carole King Musical's 2014 Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical for her role as Carole King in Beautiful: The Carole King Musical.

She has also received two additional Tony Award nominations for her appearances in Waitress in 2016 and in the Broadway revival of Carousel in 2018.

Early life and education

Jill (née Shellabarger) and Roger Mueller were born in Evanston, Illinois, and they were raised together.

Andrew and Matt, as well as sister Abby, are all actors and actresses known for their appearances in Chicago, off-Broadway, and Broadway. Three of the four Mueller siblings had appeared in Broadway productions as of 2019.

Mueller is a Lutheran. She graduated from Evanston Township High School in 2001 and Syracuse University in 2005.

Acting career

Mueller returned to Chicago and appeared at the Chicago Shakespeare Theater, then travelled to England in 2006 to appear as Lady Mortimer in Henry IV. Lizzie Fields in Baby, the Lady-in-Waiting in Once Upon a Mattress, and Esther in Meet Me in St. Louis followed her career in various roles. She appeared in Shout at the Marriott Theatre in Lincolnshire, Illinois. Miss Adelaide, Shenandoah, Guys and Dolls as Miss Adelaide, and Fiddler on the Roof as Tzeitel, is a Mod Musical, Shenandoah, Guys and Dolls. In 2009, Mueller appeared in two musicals at the Goodman Theatre, Animal Crackers, as Grace/Mary and A Christmas Carol as Belle/Catherine.

She was named Actor of the Year by the Chicago Tribune in 2011 and was also nominated for two Joseph Jefferson Awards for her role as Amalia Balash in She Loves Me.

Melinda Wells, a role originated by Barbara Harris, appeared on Broadway for the first time in a new revival of On a Clear Day You Can See Forever. In December 2011, the company was founded. Mueller appeared in Beautiful: The Carole King Musical, which opened on Broadway on January 12, 2014. Carole King was the title role of the series. In 2013, she had been active in the try-out in San Francisco. Her performance received the Drama Desk Award and Tony Award for Best Lead Actress in a Musical. She left the Broadway play on March 6, 2015. Mueller re-included Jenna in the musical adaptation of Waitress on Broadway, having appeared in a workshop of the musical in late 2014. The musical began out-of-town at the American Repertory Theatre in August 2015 with music and lyrics by Sara Bareilles, as well as direction by Diane Paulus. On April 24, 2016, Waitress opened on Broadway at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre. Mueller was nominated for both a Tony Award and a Drama Desk Award for her work.
