Jesse Stuart Life

Jesse Hilton Stuart (August 8, 1906 – February 17, 1984) was an American writer, poet, and school administrator best known for his short stories, poetry, and books as well as non-fiction autobiographical works set in central Appalachia.

Stuart, a boy who was born and raised in Greenup County, Kentucky, was heavily dependent on northeastern Kentucky for his writings.

In 1954, Stuart was named Kentucky's poet laureate.

Early life

On August 8, 1906, Stuart was born near Riverton, Greenup County, Kentucky, to Mitchell and Martha (Hilton) Stuart. Stuart served in the US Navy during World War II, but he did not see war as his calling in his life.

Education

Stuart was eventually accepted at and attended Lincoln Memorial University, which is located in Harrogate, Tennessee, after being refused admission to three colleges. He returned to his hometown and taught at Warnock High School in Greenup, Kentucky, after graduating. Later in life, he was named principal at McKell High School but resigned after one year to attend graduate school at Vanderbilt University, where Edwin Mims was one of his professors. He started his teaching at Portsmouth High School in Portsmouth, Ohio, before retiring as superintendent of the Greenup County Schools.
