Jerry Spinelli Life

Jerry Spinelli (born February 1, 1941) is an American writer who writes children's books that explore adolescence and early adulthood.

Maniac Magee, Stargirl, and Wringer are his most well-known characters.

Life

Spinelli was born in Norristown, Pennsylvania, and now lives in Phoenixville, Pennsylvania. His passion for sports led him to write a poem about a recent football win, which was revealed in a local newspaper without his knowledge. He realized that he would not be a big league baseball player and decided to become a writer at this moment.

Spinelli spent his time writing short stories and was the editor of the college literary journal The Mercury, at Gettysburg College. He became a writer and editor for a department store magazine after graduating. He spent his days in "normal occupations" during the day so that he had the energy to write fiction in his free time during the next two decades. During lunch breaks, on weekends, and after dinner, he found himself writing.

His first few books were intended for adults and were all rejected. His fifth novel was also meant for adults, but it became his first children's book. Space Station Seventh Grade, an experimental series, was published in 1982.

Spinelli earned his MA from Johns Hopkins University in 1964 after graduating from Gettysburg College. He married Eileen Mesi, another children's writer, in 1977. She has collaborated with illustrators to produce hundreds of picture books since about 1980, as Eileen Spinelli. They have six children and 21 grandchildren.
