Jemaine Atea Mahana Clement (born 10 January 1974) is a New Zealand actor, singer, comedian, producer, and writer.
Bret McKenzie, the Grammy Award-winning comedy pair Flight of the Conchords, has released several albums and produced comedy series for both the BBC and HBO.
He received six Primetime Emmy nominations for the comedy series. He has appeared in films including Men in Black 3 (2012), People Places Things (2015), and Humor Me (2016), and he has done voice-work for Despicable Me (2010), Rio 2 (2014), and The Lego Batman Movie (2017).
He made his directorial debut with What We Do in the Shadows in 2014, which he also co-wrote and appeared in with Taika Waititi.
Early life
Clement was born in Masterton, Wairarapa, on January 10, 1974, and he and his two brothers were raised in a working-class family. Clement is Ng'ti Kahungunu through his mother, and a direct descendant of the rangatira Te Whaiti Te Whaiti, who is his te-grand grandfather. Robert, his Pkehr father, was employed at the freezing works and had trouble with alcoholism, so he moved away from home when Clement was a child. Robert will later become a stained glass artist in Midhurst, Taranaki; Jemaine would reunite with his father as an adult and now has a "strong and loving" relationship with him.
Clement's mother and grandmother were both influential on him as a child, instilling his sense of humor. Despite having a strong connection to his Mori people by visiting relatives on trips to various marae, Clement grew up in an almost entirely English-speaking environment. He has expressed sadness over his regrets for his thoughts on the subject, as well as the physical abuse his grandmother suffered at school for speaking te reo Mori.
He attended Makoura College in Masterton. He went to Wellington, where he studied drama and film at Victoria University of Wellington, where he stayed after finishing school. He met Taika Waititi, who went on to form So You're a Man and the Humourbeasts. The Humourbeasts toured New Zealand in 2004 as part of The Untold Tales of Maui, a reworking of the traditional Maori legends of Mui. The Billy T Award, New Zealand's highest comedy award, was given to the pair. He also met Bret McKenzie, with whom he appeared in Edinburgh, during his time in Edinburgh, forming Flight of the Conchords.
Personal life
When he was a child, Clement's whine did not have a car, and as a result, he has never learned to drive. Miranda Manasiadis, Clement's longtime girlfriend, stage actress, and playwright, married him in August 2008. Sophocles Iraia's son was born in New York City in October 2008 and is named after Manasiadis' Greek great-grandfather Sophocles and Clement's Titina Te Whaiti. They live in Wellington.
Career
Clement and McKenzie have toured around the world, with two of their albums being released: Folk the World Tour in 2002, The Distant Future EP in 2005 (winner of the 2008 Grammy Award for Best Comedy Album), Flight of the Conchords in 2008 (winner of the Best Comedy Album), and I Told You I Was Freaky in 2009. Flight of the Conchords, a six-part comedy radio show on BBC Radio 2, was produced by the Conchords in 2005. They appeared on Late Night with Conan O'Brien, the Late Show with David Letterman, and The Late Late Show. The Conchords received their own 12-part HBO series Flight of the Conchords, which was based on their earlier BBC radio series of the same name, after appearing on HBO's One Night Stand in 2005. Its first season lasted from June to September 2007, and it was relaunched on HBO in the United States from January to March 2009. In December 2009, the Conchords announced that the show would not have a third season.
Clement has appeared in several feature films. Tongan Ninja, directed by Jason Stutter of New Zealand, was his debut. He has worked with Stutter on two more films, the low budget ghost comedy Diagnosis: Death and the Passion Predicament, based on the book by late New Zealand novelist Ronald Hugh Morrieson. Clement has also appeared in Gentlemen Broncos, directed by Napoleon Dynamite's Jared Hess. For his service in this role, he was nominated for the Independent Spirit Award for Best Supporting Male. Despite the fact that Gentlemen Broncos was almost universally panned by critics, some analysts singled out Clement's performance for praise. Jerry was in Despicable Me in 2010 and appeared in the film Dinner for Schmucks. In 2011, he appeared in Rio as Nigel, and in 2012, he appeared as the principal antagonist Boris the Animal in Men in Black 3. Jemaine co-wrote, co-directed, and appeared in a vampire mockumentary called What We Do in the Shadows with Taika Waititi in 2012. On January 19, 2014, it premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. In Rio 2, he reprised his role as Nigel.
Clement has appeared in television commercials throughout the world and has appeared in voiceovers for several others in New Zealand. Outback Steakhouse began airing a series of television commercials starring Clement during Super Bowl XL, in which Clement pretends to be Australian and fakes an Australian accent. One of Flight of the Conchords' longest running gags is the common rivalry between New Zealand and Australia, as well as the differences in their accents. In July 2006, the campaign came to an end.
Clement has been involved in award-winning radio work. Clement was named a writer for Trashed, a newspaper published in Wellington, in 1999. He was awarded a Special Radio Awards Commendation for The Sunglass Store in 2000.
Clement was a writer and actor of the television programs Skitz and Tellylaughs in New Zealand, in addition to his television appearances on Flight of the Conchords. In "Elementary School Musical," the season premiere of the 22nd season of The Simpsons, Clement and fellow Conchord member Bret McKenzie appeared as a pair of camp counselors.
In the 2014 film Muppets Most Wanted, a sequel to The Muppets (2011), Clement also played a prisoner in a Russian gulag.
In a special edition of the Australian publication Who, Clement was listed as one of 2008's "100 Sexiest People." McKenzie, a Conchord member, was on the same list.
Clement performed a "mind-reading fart" on an episode of Rick and Morty's Adult Swim animated series "Goodbye Moonmen" in 2015. Clement appeared in People Places Things, a self-produced film that received rave reviews.
In 2016, Clement lent his voice to Tamatoa, a massive coconut crab in Disney's animated film Moana, both in English and Mori. The character was based on David Bowie's voice.
In 2017, Clement appeared in the FX TV series Legion as Oliver Bird. In The Lego Batman Movie, he also appeared as Sauron.
