Career
Watson was born in Carnarvon and grew up in Northam, Western Australia. He was given the name Gumby, which referred to the clay animation TV show of the same name. Watson shortened the name to GUM when he started recording his own stuff.
Watson unveiled Delorean Highway digitally in Australia on May 30, 2014. Watson was left wondering that the bulk of the data had been collected in 2011, and Watson recalls that "when it finally came out, it felt so good!" It looked so old to me." A thousand copies of Delorean Highway were limited to a thousand copies in an LP. The album was described as a series of "paranoid pop songs" that are "mainly about falling in love and all of the things that he [Watson] thinks are going to kill him." Delorean Highway debuted at number 19 on Happy Mag's list of the "Best psychedelic rock albums of the 2010s" in October 2019.
Watson's second album, which was produced with Jerome Watson's help in September 2014, was released in London. The thirteen track Glamorous Damage was announced in September 2015 and was released on November 13, 2015. It came before Kevin Parker's remixed "Anaesthetized Lesson" was released in March 2016. Watson referred to the album's name as "about people glamorizing getting fucked up or being weirdos," although there is always the risk that you could damage yourself by placing it on a pedestal." Watson appears live on some back tracks. Stuart Berman of Pitchfork referred to the album as "the 8-bit, Nintendo video game version of a blockbuster film."
Flash in the Pan, a third album, was teased on YouTube on November 3rd and released on November 11th, 2016. The single "Gemini" appeared ahead of it. The NME has described it as "a swirl of looped vocals, Pond-y synth work, and dreamy, subtle bass." Watson said that it was "the first song I recorded on the album and certainly the most immediate." Sergio Flores' contribution to saxophone was included in the program.
Watson resides in Beaconsfield, a suburb near Fremantle, Western Australia. Jack, his son and his partner Lucy welcomed him in December 2019.
