Career

MTV offered him a job as a VJ on April 2, 1991, which Mohr turned down. Rather, Mohr hosted Lip Service on MTV, earning him a CableACE Award. He then appeared on Saturday Night Live in 1993–94 and 1994–95 seasons. Gasping for Airtime: Two Years in the Trenches of Saturday Night Live chronicles this traumatic period of his life, including his struggle with persistent panic attacks. Sarah Silverman, a SNL co-star, later credited him with saving his life by assisting him with the issue.

In the first season of The Jeff Foxworthy Show as Jeff Foxworthy's brother, Wayne, Mohr appeared on several occasions. In 1996, Mohr's first major film role was when he appeared in Conniving Bob Sugar, a sleazy sports agent in Jerry Maguire, and then in 1997, he appeared in Picture Perfect with Jennifer Aniston. Mohr appeared in the television series Action, in which he played sleazy film producer Peter Dragon. He was the voice-over artist for Fox Sports Net's Beyond the Glory. Suicide Kings, Are We There Yet?, Young Soldiers, Go, Pay It Forward, and The Groomsmen were all Suicide Kings. Michael Eisner had been offered a late night talk show, but Mohr declined, instead persuaded Eisner to host a talk show on ESPN, Mohr Sports, which ran briefly in 2001 before being cancelled. Jimmy Kimmel was fired from Mohr's show job and became Jimmy Kimmel Live!

Mohr produced, hosted, and was executive producer of NBC's Last Comic Standing reality television show in 2003 and 2004. The show aired for three seasons, but it was cancelled near the end of the third season due to poor ratings, and only to be revived later. Mohr had a frank protest against NBC about the show's cancellation and did not return for the show's fourth season in 2006. Mohr was replaced by new host Anthony Clark, but he was still listed as a consultant. Mohr appeared as a guest comedian on the season finale of Last Comic Standing 4. His recurring role on the television show Ghost Whisperer transitioned to a regular role. He appeared in "My Own Private Practice Guy," a 2003 episode of the soap opera Scrubs, and in three episodes of The West Wing in the recurring role of Taylor Reid. In Comedy Central's animated series Shorties Watchin' Shorties, portions of Mohr's stand-up were included. He and his Giraffe Productions firm in 2005 reached an agreement with Sony Pictures Television.

For two seasons on CBS sitcom Gary Unmarried, Mohr played newly divorced father Gary Brooks, the title character. Paula Marshall played his ex-wife. Billy in Clint Eastwood's thriller film Hereafter appeared in January 2010. In 2010, he appeared on NBC's Outlaw.

Mohr has been frequent contributors to The Jim Rome Exhibition and has often hosted the show. Mohr took seventh place in the 2007 Smack-Off, 6th place in the 2008 Smack-Off, 10th place in the 2009 Smack-Off, 6th position in the 2010 Smack-Off, and 6th in the 2011 Smack-Off. Mohr is also known to do "drive-by" call-ins to the show, often to promote one of his stand-up shows or live events.

In Rome's longtime 12 to 3 p.m. (ET) timeslot, Mohr Sports Radio as he hosts a daily talk show named Jay Mohr Sports (the publisher of Fox Sports Radio) as Rome's longtime 12 to 3 p.m. (ET) timeslot. Various internet platforms and regional affiliates carry the show. Jay Mohr Sports has shifted to the 3 p.m. time slot on Fox Sports Radio on November 3, 2014. Rich Eisen could take over the 12-3 p.m. slot.

Mohr Stories, Mohr's own podcast. The podcast was hosted on the SModcast Network and was often taped in his garage, which he has described as Fake Mustache Studios. Mohr announced his amicable departure from the SModcast network on May 4, 2012. Fake Mustache Studios is a website that publishes Mohr Stories. He has since begun hosting Mohr Stories on his own website, Fake Mustache Studios.

Gasping for Airtime: Two Years in the Trenches of Saturday Night Live, Mohr's first book, Gasping for Airtime, was published by Hyperion in June 2004 and chronicled his two years as a host. Mohr's second book, No Wonder My Parents Drank: Tales from a Stand-Up Dad, was published in May 2010.
