Jake Canuso (born 13 January 1970) is an actor and dancer best known for his appearance in Benidorm, in which he portrays Solana barman Mateo Castellanos.

Personal life

Canuso was born near Zurich, Switzerland, to immigrants from southern Italy. He came from the United Kingdom when he was 18 years old.

Canuso survived the Indian Ocean tsunami in December 2004, while Thai tourists in Ko Phra Thong, Thailand, were on vacation. He scaled a tree after witnessing the first waves and was trapped underwater after the tree snapped. He had a fear of water and did not go into the sea for many years.

Career

Canuso, a former dancer, appeared as a ballet dancer in Annie Lennox's "No More I Love You" music video. He also appeared in "We Should Be Dancing," JX's "Don't Give Me Your Life," Carter USM's "Let's Get Tattoos," Emma Bunton's "Crickets Sing for Anamaria," and JX's "We Should Be Dancing." Canuso has appeared as a dancer for many shows, including the Spice Girls, Elton John, and Annie Lennox. On Top of the Pops, he also appeared as a dancer.

Canuso appears in the ITV comedy series Benidorm as flirtatious barman Mateo Castellanos and is the sitcom's longest-serving actor, appearing in all 74 episodes. Canuso and several other cast members were selected to appear in Benidorm Live, a touring stage version of the film.

Canuso appeared on ITV diving show Splash!, hosted by Tom Daley in January 2013.
