Jarrett Culver (born February 20, 1999) is an American professional basketball player for the Minnesota Timberwolves of the National Basketball Association (NBA).

He played college basketball for the Texas Tech Red Raiders.

Early life

Culver was born to Regina and Hiawatha Culver Jr. in Dallas, Texas. At the age of three he moved to Lubbock, Texas where he grew up. His father is a pastor at Rising Star Baptist Church, his mother a director of a local Head Start. Culver grew up playing football and soccer before focusing on basketball while at Irons Middle School. He often played NBA 2K and pickup basketball in his driveway with his older brothers, Trey and J.J.

Personal life

Culver is a Christian. His father, Hiawatha Culver Jr. is the Texas Tech team chaplain and delivered the pre-game prayer for Texas Tech before each home basketball game. In high school, Jarrett played basketball with older brother J. J., who later joined the team at Wayland Baptist University. J.J. reportedly scored a hundred points in a game. Trey Culver, his oldest brother, was a decorated athlete for the Texas Tech track and field team in the high jump, tying the fourth-best mark in collegiate indoor history in 2018.

High school career

Culver's basketball team, Randy Dean, attended Coronado High School in Lubbock, where he competed basketball under head coach Randy Dean. As a freshman, he averaged 20 points per game, leading his team to the 6A regional semifinals. Lubbock Avalanche-Journal named Culver as the year's Lone Star Varsity Player of the Year. He averaged 30 points per game and led his team in rebounds and assists in his senior season. Culver aggravated a shoulder injury he suffered as a youth at the start of the season, but he led Coronado to the playoffs and was named Lone Star Varsity Player of the Year. On September 22, 2016, Culver was a unanimous three-star recruit who committed to Texas Tech. He had offers from several other NCAA Division I programs, including Baylor, Texas, and Illinois.

College career

In a 75–50 victory over South Alabama on November 10, 2017, Culver debuted for Texas Tech, scoring 2 points in 16 minutes. On November 22, he set a season-high in non-conference play against Wofford, scoring 21 points. In a 103–69 victory over Savannah State, Culver earned 18 points and a season-best 7 assists. He was named Big 12 Conference Newcomer of the Week two days later. Against Rice, Culver chipped in 8 points and a season-high 6 steals on December 16. On February 26, 2018, he scored his first double-double against West Virginia, posting season-bests of 26 points and 12 rebounds. Culver's freshman averaged 11.2 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 1.1 steals per game. In conference play, he scored 229 points, beating the Texas Tech freshman record set by Martin Zeno in 2005.

Culver was named preseason All-Big 12 honorable mention in his sophomore season. He was also one of 20 players to be selected for the 2019 Jerry West Award watch list. With the departures of key players Zhaire Smith and Keenan Evans, Culver had a leading role in his second year. In an 87-37 victory over Incarnate Word, he made his debut on November 6, 2018, scoring 16 points and 4 assists. Culver won the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award at the Hall of Fame Classic on November 20, defeating Nebraska by 26 points. He became one of 20 players to be selected to the Oscar Robertson Trophy midseason watch list on the next day. In a victory over Abilene Christian on December 15, Culver erupted for 30 points, shooting 12-of-13 from the field. He received Big 12 Player of the Week awards just weeks after. Culver scored 31 points against Iowa State on March 9, 2019, not just a season-best but also a career-high.

He was named Big 12 Player of the Year at the end of conference play after leading the Red Raiders to a share of the Big 12 regular season championship. Despite him scoring 26 points and hauling in ten rebounds, the Red Raiders were defeated by #10 seed West Virginia in the quarterfinals of the 2019 Big 12 men's basketball tournament. Culver nearly triple-double against #14 seed Northern Kentucky in the first round of the 2019 NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament, with 29 points, 8 rebounds, and 7 assists. Culver was instrumental in another win over #6 seed Buffalo in the second round, posting a double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds. Against #6 seed Buffalo, he had 5 assists, 3 steals, and 2 blocks. He aided the Red Raiders to a historic upset over the #2 seed Michigan Wolverines, scoring 22 points in the regional semifinals (the Sweet 16). With 19 points and another upset against #1 seed Gonzaga, the program's first-ever appearance in the national semifinals (the Final Four) was again in the regional finals. In a 61-51 victory over Texas Tech, Culver struggled in the Final Four game against Michigan State, scoring ten points on 3/12 shooting in a 61–51 victory. Culver's performance in the championship game was once more poor, scoring 15 points on 5/22 shooting in an 85-77 overtime loss to Virginia. Culver has drafted in the 2019 NBA draft following the season.

Professional career

The Phoenix Suns selected Culver as the sixth pick of the 2019 NBA draft. His draft rights were quickly traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves in exchange for Dario ari and the eleventh pick of the draft. On July 6, the trade was officially concluded. The Minnesota Timberwolves announced Culver on July 8, 2019. Culver made his NBA debut in 2019 on October 23, 2019, taking four points, two assists, and one steal from bench in a 127–126 overtime victory over the Brooklyn Nets.

In exchange for Patrick Beverley, Culver and Juancho Hernangomez were traded to the Memphis Grizzlies on August 25, 2021.

Culver, who played for the Atlanta Hawks in September 12, 2022, signed a two-way contract.
