Janet Evanovich Life

Janet Evanovich (née Schneider, b. 1943) is an American writer.

Stephanie Plum, a former lingerie purchaser from Trenton, New Jersey, who became a bounty hunter, began writing short contemporary romance books under the pen name Steffie Hall, but she rose to prominence when writing a string of contemporary mysteries starring Stephanie Plum, a former lingerie hunter who becomes a bounty hunter after losing her job.

The books in this series have appeared on The New York Times, USA Today, Wall Street Journal, and Amazon bestseller lists.

Evanovich's last seventeen Plums debuts on the NY Times Best Sellers List, and eleven of them have landed on the USA Today Best-Selling Books list, placing them at #1.

She has more than two hundred million books in print and has been translated into over 40 languages around the world.

Early years

Evanovich, a second-generation American born in South River, New Jersey, as a Machinist and a housewife. She became the first in her family to attend college after attending South River High School and studied art at Douglass College, a Rutgers University program.

Evanovich had children when she was pregnant, so she became a housewife like her mother. She began writing novels in her thirties. Evanovich took lessons in improv acting to learn the art of writing dialogue. She attempted to write the Great American Novel for ten years, but she was unable to sell three manuscripts. Evanovich read several romances and found that she loved the subject after someone suggested that she write romance novels. She wrote two romances and submitted them for publication. Evanovich, who was still struggling to find a publisher, has ceased writing and joined a temporary employment company. She received an invitation to buy her second romance book for $2,000, which she described as a "shocking sum."

Personal life

Evanovich works eight to eight hours a day during the week. She typically works for an additional four hours a day on weekends. She makes a brief outline before beginning a new book, with one or two sentences describing what will happen in each chapter. Evanovich goes on book tours regularly after the publication of a new book. Thousands of people attended her book signings. All of the titles were selected from fan submissions starting with her third Stephanie Plum book, Three to Get Deadly, and ending with Smokin' Seventeen.

Evanovich and her husband, Pete, who married in 1964, now live in Hawaii and North Carolina. Evanovich's niece by marriage, Stephanie Evanovich, is married to Evanovich, her husband, son, and daughter.
