Janet Dailey Life

Janet Dailey (April 21, 1944 – December 14, 2013) was an American author of numerous romance books as Janet Dailey (her married name).

Her books have been translated into nineteen languages and have sold more than 300 million copies around the world.

Dailey was both an author and entrepreneur.

Early years

Janet Anne Haradon was born in Storm Lake, Iowa, to Boyd Clayton Haradon and Lena Louise (Zimmer) Haradon. She grew up in Iowa and graduated from high school in Independence, Iowa.

Dailey had always aspired to be a writer and was an avid reader. When she was young, her three elder sisters used to talk to her. She had her own library card by the age of four by then. She graduated from Jefferson High School in Independence, Iowa, in 1962, and worked for a building company owned by her future husband, Bill Dailey, who was 15 years old. The two continued to work together, often spending 17 hours a day, seven days a week, and married in 1964.

Dailey's husband challenged her to prove it in 1974, after claiming that she could write a better romance book than those she had read. Dailey spent eight months writing her first book, No Quarter Asked, and then sent a query letter to Harlequin asking if they would like to read it. She was told that because Harlequin only reprinted Mills & Boon books at that time, she would have to reach them in London. Mills & Boon acquired the book and published it in 1974. Dailey was the first American woman to be published by Mills & Boon. No Quarter Asked was released by Harlequin as part of its Presents collection in 1976, having already published multiple titles for Mills & Boon. Although several have stated that Dailey was the first American author to be published by Harlequin, the Canadian publisher has in fact published several American authors before 1958, when Mills & Book began solely reprinting Mills & Book titles. Harlequin also had their American writer for the remainder of the 1970s, according to Nora Roberts.

Personal life

Bill Dailey and her husband Bill moved from Council Bluffs, Iowa, to Branson, Missouri, where Bill promoted and produced shows at the Americana Theater. He died on August 5, 2005, but it was not until 2005 that he died.

Branson was deemed "a desirable place to live," Dailey said. The weather is generally fine, the country is beautiful, and the people are so welcoming and unobtrusive."

She died at her Branson home on December 14, 2013 after experiencing heart reversal problems.
