Career
Brooks had been writing mainly in the science fiction, western, literature, and non-fiction genres since high school. He was given a copy of J. R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings, one day, which inspired him to write in one genre. Brooks said during his TEDxRainier talk "Why Write About Elves" as well as at the Charlotte Literary Festival, that the inspiration for his style of writing was due to William Faulkner's works. He made his debut in 1977 with The Sword of Shannara, based on this inspiration.
Brooks moved on to the Landover series after completing two sequels to The Sword of Shannara. The Heritage of Shannara was Brooks' first book collection. He wrote more Landover books for the next fourteen years before moving to write The Word and Void trilogy. Brooks wrote the prequel to Shannara's The Sword of Shannara, titled First King of Shannara, in continuation of the Shannara series. He created two series, The Voyage of Jerle Shannara and High Druid of Shannara, as well as Genesis of Shannara, a trilogy bridging his Word and Void and Shannara. In August 2009, A Princess of Landover, the sixth book in the Landover series, was published. Legends of Shannara, a duology set in Shannara, was published next. The first book, Bearers of the Black Staff, was published in August 2010, and the second, The Measure of the Magic, was published in August 2011. The Dark Legacy of Shannara was his next film in which he appeared. The three books are categorized: Wards of Faerie (Feb 2013), Bloodfire Quest (June 2013), and Witch Wraith (Dec 2013). He followed this with the trilogy Defenders of Shannara, which included The High Druid's Blade (June 2014), The Darkling Child (June 2015), and The Sorcerer's Daughter (May 24, 2016). According to his website, he is currently working on the final and concluding tetralogy of Shannara's film The Fall of Shannara. The Black Elfstone, the first book in the series, was published on June 13, 2017. The Skaar Invasion, the second book in the series, was published on June 19, 2018. The Stiehl Assassin, the third book in the series, was published on May 28, 2019. The Last Druid is the fourth and final book in the tetralogy, and it will be published on October 20, 2020.
The Shannara Chronicles, a Shannara Chronicles series, premiered on MTV in January 2016. As there are strong female characters in the second book that did not appear in the first book, the show opens with Elfstones, the second book in the original series. On Spike TV, the second season premiered in 2017. The series had been cancelled after two seasons, according to the actress on January 16, 2018. The show is now being marketed to other televisions, according to the producers.
