Mixed martial arts career

While living in the United Kingdom, Wilks began training in Jeet Kune Do, Bruce Lee's martial art style. In Karate and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Wilks holds black belts.

Roman Mitichyan, the Ultimate Fighter 5 champion, was in his first professional match against him. In the second round, Wilks won the fight by armbar submission. Since the war, he took about a year off fighting so he could concentrate on instructing his students. He returned for his second fight but was defeated by Jimmy Smith. Wilks won the Gladiator Challenge welterweight title before going to tape.

He defeated Che Mills by submission in an elimination tournament that earned him a trip to Las Vegas, Nevada, to compete on the show. Wilks was in his second bout against Team United States combat Frank Lester, but Wilks won by submission in the second round. Wilkner defeated Lester for the second time in a row after Lester returned to the tournament to beat David Faulkner while replacing him for Jason Pierce, who was suspended from the tournament by Dana White. In the third round, Wilks defeated Lester by TKO via knees, gaining a spot in the live finale.

Wilks made his UFC debut against DaMarques Johnson at The Ultimate Fighter: United States vs. United Kingdom Finale on June 20, 2009. Wilks was crowned TUF 9 welterweight champion after the show. Wilks dominated the fight against Johnson, with strong striking and good submission attempts. In the closing seconds of the first round, Wilks won the match with Johnson via a rear naked choke choke submission.

On November 14, 2009, the Wilks lost via 3rd-round TKO to Matt Brown. Wilks came back early in the third round after being knocked down in the second and being rescued by a signal delay, before losing first place. Brown then defended the TKO win from a top position. Before UFC 115, Wilks reported that Brown had broken his orbital bone with an elbow strike in the first 30 seconds of the first round.

At UFC 115, Wilks then met Peter Sobotta. He was able to win the fight by a unanimous decision.

Claude Patrick, a Canadian prospect, was defeated by Wilks next at UFC 120 in London. He lost the fight by majority decision.

On April 30, 2011, Wilks was scheduled to face Rory MacDonald at UFC 129. On the other hand, Nate Diaz replaced Wilks on the card.

At UFC Fight Night 24, Wilks was supposed to replace Duane Ludwig and face Amir Sadollah. Wilks was also wounded and was replaced by DaMarques Johnson, but DaMarques Johnson was recalled.

Wilks resigned from active MMA competition after sustained extensive injuries, including a fractured vertebrae, and after doctors told him he had a "significant risk of paralysis" if he continued to fight, Wilks revealed on May 14th.
