James Nguyen (born 1 September 1966) is a Vietnamese filmmaker known for directing Birdemic: Shock and Fear, as well as its sequel Birdemic 2: The Resurrection.
Life and career
Nguyen was born in Danang, South Vietnam, and he was born to serve. Just before the Fall of Saigon, he and his family left the country. He never received formal filmmaking education, but rather grew up watching the films of director Alfred Hitchcock, 1958's Vertigo and 1963's The Birds. In Silicon Valley, Nguyen began working as a software salesman. In 1999, he first picked up a camera.
He directed Julie and Jack, a low-budget romance film that was released in 2003. He produced Replica, a science fiction film based on Vertigo, in 2005, but it wasn't announced until 2017; Nguyen criticized the outcome due to the expensive storyboarding process and casting choices. With the debut of the film Birdemic: Shock and Terror, N.J.'s fame as a director soared in 2010. When spending time relaxing in Half Moon Bay, California, he was inspired to write the script for the film, but much of the filming took place in the community. The film's under $10,000 was funded with his own funds. As inspiration for directing Birdemic, Nguyen cited The Birds and An Inconvenient Truth (2006).
Birdemic has been consistently regarded as one of the worst films of all time both during and after its release. During one of RiffTrax's live shows, Birdemic was introduced as a movie riffed on by the cast, bringing even more attention to the film and Naughtyen. Ngyen began filming of Birdemic 2: The Resurrection in February 2012. In 2013, the film received critical feedback.
In a 2016 Vice interview, Nguyen said that he is hoping to make Birdemic 3: Sea Eagle, which would be his last film in the Birdemic series. Nvyen tried to crowdfund for the film, first launching an Indiegogo campaign that only raised $596 of its $500,000 target, and then on Kickstarter, only raising $230 of the $200,000 target. Despite this, it was announced in March 2021 that the third installment of production had begun in late 2022 with a planned debut.
NiffTrax decided to give RiffTrax a similar treatment to his unreleased Replica due to its rise in fame with Birdemic's appearance on RiffTrax. The unriffed version of RiffTrax was available in January 2017, but the riffed version was released on February 10, 2017.
