Jaime V.ctor Escudero (Spanish: [xajme al'swa]), and Squire, a Spanish DJ and former racing champion best known for competing in Formula One between 2009 and 2011, was the 2008 British Formula 3 champion. He is the son of Jaime Alguersuari, Sr., a former motorcyclist and racing racer.

At the 2009 Hungarian Grand Prix, Alguersuari became the first Formula One racer to compete in Formula One for the first time in history – and in the process, became the first driver to be born in the 1990s to compete in Formula One. Max Verstappen broke the record in 2015, when he was only 17 years old. Alguersuari joined British radio station BBC Radio 5 Live to be their expert summariser for the 2012 Formula One season after losing his job with Toro Rosso in late 2011. Alguersuari officially retired from motorsport to concentrate on his DJ work at the age of 25.

Career

Alguersuari was born in Barcelona, Spain, and began his Formula Racing career in the Italian Formula 1600 Junior Series in 2005. He won the Italian Formula Renault Winter Series in 2006 before finishing as runner-up to Mika Mäki in the main championship the following year.

For 2008, he took the British Formula Three Championship, teaming up with Brendon Hartley, Oliver Turvey, and Sam Abay. Alguersuari defeated Alguersuari, Hartley, Turvey, and Sergio Pérez in the final three races of the season, winning the championship for the fourth time in a season-long battle. He also became the youngest champion in championship history, aged 18 years and 203 days. In the 2008 Race of Champions event at Wembley Stadium in December 2008, he also prayed for the injured Mark Webber.

In 2009, he participated in the Formula Renault 3.5 Series, first with the Carlin team and then as his teammate, as well as Turvey once more. He was eighth in the championship, with one podium finish, and second-highest rookie in the standings behind Turvey at the time of his switch to Formula One mid-season. Despite being promoted to an F1 racing seat, he continued on in FR3.5. Alguersuari returned to Formula One for the first time this week, winning his first pole and his first victory in the series. His 27-point haul for the weekend elevated him from eighth to third in the championship standings. Alguersuari ended up sixth in the final standings after starting third.

In the second half of the 2009 Formula One season, Alguersuari took over as reserve driver for the Red Bull Racing and Scuderia Toro Rosso Formula One teams from fellow Red Bull Junior driver Brendon Hartley. Despite a lack of official notification, racer Sébastien Bourdais left Toro Rosso shortly after the 2009 German Grand Prix, and Alguersuari was immediately scheduled to replace him. Toro Rosso announced that Alguersuari would race for the team at the 2009 Hungarian Grand Prix. He became the youngest Formula One racer in the country's youngest ever Formula One race at the age of 19 years and 125 days, beating the record previously held by Mike Thackwell. He was only the seventh child to start a Grand Prix. Following a mechanical malfunction, qualifying in last place, he came in fifteenth, one place ahead of teammate Sébastien Buemi. He had little success the rest of the season, with his best result coming at the 2009 Brazilian Grand Prix, where he finished in 14th place. He only finished 3 of the remaining 8 races and retired in the other five. He suffered with a major accident in the Japanese Grand Prix earlier this season, while trying to qualify for his first points.

Toro Rosso retained Alguersuari for the 2010 season, beginning with a career-best finish in Bahrain and eleventh in Australia, with 22 laps battling with the 7 time world champion Michael Schumacher in Bahrain. Alguersuari claimed his first ever Formula One point in Malaysia with a ninth-place finish one week later. Franz Tost, a Toro Rosso team principal, applauded Alguersuari's results, saying the Spaniard "drove a spectacular run." Alguersuari then earned a second point after finishing tenth at his home Grand Prix, achieving tenth. Alguersuari and his Red Bull team travelled to the Dominican Republic in May and became one of the first Formula One vehicles to ever drive a Formula 1 car on the beaches there. At the year's final race in Abu Dhabi, he only had one more finish in the next 14 races.

Toro Rosso announced that Alguersuari would be retained alongside Sébastien Buemi for the 2011 season. Alguersuari qualified outside the top ten for the first time in Formula One, with a seventh place grid grid start in China after finishing the first two races outside the points. In the next three races, two 16th places and a retirement followed before he claimed his eighth place in Formula One and then equaling it at the European Grand Prix. These findings came at a time when Alguersuari is in need of a replacement, with Daniel Ricciardo being attributed to Alguersuari's departure from Alguersuari for the 2012 season. Alguersuari came in tenth at the British Grand Prix, giving him a run of three consecutive top scoring finishes. He set a new personal record of 6th at the Belgian Grand Prix before being forced to leave early in the race after a first corner collision with Bruno Senna. Alguersuari finished in seventh position at the Italian Grand Prix, surpassing his previous record of two eighth positions earlier this season. On the penultimate lap in Singapore, he crashed out but was still ranked in 21st place. Alguersuari finished seventh in Korea after beating Nico Rosberg on the final lap and securing their eighth-place finish in India.

Alguersuari took the Desafio Internacional das Estrelas karting tournament, hosted by Felipe Massa, winning the last race of the season in Brazil. Toro Rosso announced on December 14th that Ricciardo and Jean-Éric Vergne would be the team's drivers in 2012, overtaking Alguersuari and Buemi.

Alguersuari said in 2013 that he would not be returning to Formula One right away. He qualified in a round of the CIK-FIA KZ world karting championship this week.

He later became a member of Formula E Drivers' Club, enabling him to be selected by any of the Formula E teams to compete with them. Alguersuari revealed in March 2014 that he would compete with Virgin Racing, joining Sam Bird for the season. Alguersuari finished fourth at the 2015 Buenos Aires ePrix, but he only scored points on four occasions throughout the year. At the 2015 Monaco ePrix, where he was trapped in the first lap accident, he had a single retirement. Due to minor health issues causing him to faint at the end of the 2015 Moscow ePrix, Alguersuari had to miss the final two rounds of the season, and Fabio Leimer was recalled. Alguersuari finished the season with 30 points and finished 13th in the championship.

Alguersuari officially dropped out of all motor sports on October 1, 2015, saying he had "fallen out of love with this lady."

Alguersuari was also involved in the CIK-FIA World Cup - KZ1 in 2009, where he was 23rd.

In 2010, Alguersuari also participated in the Desafio Internacional das Estrelas (where he was sixth), 2011 (where he took first) and 2013 (seventeenth).

He was ninth in the CIK-FIA World KZ Championship in 2013, although he was still out of Formula One.

In 2021, years after announcing his retirement from motorsports, the Spanish pilot decided to return to action by participating in the Spanish karting championship. However, he finished third in the Campillos' inaugural season, but he was unable to compete in the majority of the season and cut short his plans to compete in the world championship and European karting championship. He returned to Zaragoza, Zaragoza, in October, where he defeated the event in the last race of the season. He competed in the Winter Cup in Lonato, finishing 15th after gaining 10 positions after racking 10.

Alguersuari finished 16th after climbing 14 positions and establishing the fastest lap in 2022. He has also registered to compete in the Spanish karting championship for the first time.

DJ career

Alguersuari owns his own recording studio in Barcelona and is well known in Spain as a DJ under the stage name Squire (in reference to his second surname Escudero). Alguersuari headlined the 2010 Barcelona Music Conference and appeared at clubs including Amnesia in Ibiza. Organic Life, Blanco y Negro Records' debut, was released on September 14, 2011, and it debuted on iTunes five days after its introduction.

In 2019, he released The Leftovers of Stars Collide, a collaborative effort with Pablo Boltvar, and in 2021, Squire released STOP, his new album.
