Pedro Martnez de la Rosa (Spanish pronunciation: [pee la rosa]; born 24 February 1971) is a Spanish former Formula One racer who has competed in 107 Grands Prix for the Arrows, Jaguar, McLaren, Sauber, and HRT teams. He made his Formula One debut on March 7, 1999, becoming one of seventy-six drivers to score a point in his first round. He has earned a total of 35 championship points, including a podium finish at the 2006 Hong Kong Grand Prix.
Early career
De la Rosa was born in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain, and unlike most drivers, he started his career in radio-controlled cars, specialising in 1:8 off-road. He won three straight domestic championship titles between 1983 and 1985, becoming the first European radio controlled off-road championship twice in 1983 and 1984, as runner-up in the inaugural world championship in 1986. It was only after that he began karting in a local Spanish championship in 1988, when he was 17. In 1989, he rejoined Formula Fiat Uno and became the champion.
Professional career
De la Rosa debuted in the Spanish Formula Ford 1600 in 1990 and became champion. He later rode in the British Formula Ford 1600, winning two podiums out of six races. De la Rosa claimed fourth place in the Spanish Formula Renault Championship in 1991 with three podium finishes. He was both a European and British Formula Renault champion in 1992. In the upcoming two years, he will have slowed the order. He was champion of the Japanese Formula Three series and third in the Macau Grand Prix in 1995. In 1996, he finished eighth in both the Formula Nippon and All Japan GT Championships. He was champion of Formula Nippon this year. With Michael Krumm, he was also the All Japan GT champion.
