Jacob Markstrom Career

Playing career

On May 12, 2008, Markström signed a two-year deal with the Bryn IF senior staff. He had been playing for the Bryn IF junior team previously. The butterfly style goaltender was selected 31st overall in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft, following solid results in the Swedish Hockey League and internationally for Sweden in the Under 18 and World Junior tournaments.

Markström led the Elitserien in the savings percentage (SVS%) and average goals against average (GAA) figures from 2009 to 2.01, respectively. On June 1, 2010, it was announced that the Panthers and Markström had reached an agreement on an entry-level contract.

Markström made his NHL debut at the Prudential Center in Newark on January 23, 2011 when he swapped starter Scott Clemmensen with starter Scott Clemmensen at the start of the second period in a loss to the New Jersey Devils. He made the Panthers' youngest goaltender on debut.

Markström was then sent by the Rochester Americans, Florida's AHL affiliate team. Markström was supposed to get used to hockey in North America, according to the team's instructions, since players had various shooting tendencies. During his first season in the AHL, the goaltender had a rough start to his career, as well as strained his knee. Markström returned to action after recovering from injuries in South Florida, with the aim of having a good shot at the NHL level.

Markström started training camp in Florida with Tomáz Vokoun's free agency for the Washington Capitals, fighting for a starting or backup job with fellow goaltenders José Théodore and Scott Clemmensen and Scott Clemmensen, who was later awarded the backup role after Clemmensen was injured. Markström won his first NHL victory against the New York Islanders in the third period on October 22nd. He made 18 saves on 18 shots.

Markström's season was short, but with starter José Théodore suffering an injury on March 2nd that forced him to miss the remainder of the season, Markström was given de facto full-time duties, beginning most of their games during the remainder of the season.

Markstrom was expected to be the Panthers' full-time starter at the 2013-14 season, but Théodore was not retained, and Markström signed a two-year contract extension. Tim Thomas would be drafted to a one-year deal, but Markström was subsequently demoted to the AHL for the second time. He was traded by the Panthers, along with forward Shawn Matthias, to the Vancouver Canucks in exchange for Roberto Luongo and Steven Anthony, where he served as Vancouver's backup behind fellow Swede Eddie Läck on March 4th, 2014.

During the 2014–15 season, Markström did not make the Canucks out of training camp. After clearing waivers, he was sent to the Canucks' AHL affiliate, the Utica Comets. Markström was recalled by the Canucks to play as backup to Eddie Läck and was allowed three goals on four shots in 2015 against the San Jose Sharks but was suspended after giving three goals on four shots. The Canucks lost the game 6–2. Markström made two saves on two shots against the Columbus Blue Jackets on March 19, 2015, when he was playing for the Columbus Blue Jackets. The Canucks lost their game 6–2 as well. On March 22, 2015, Markström won his first and only victory of the 2014–15 season, when the Canucks defeated the Arizona Coyotes 3–1.

Markström was released on June 29, 2015, during a two-year one-way contract with the Vancouver Canucks.

Markström agreed to a three-year deal with the Canucks on July 7th.

Markström scored his first NHL shutout in a 3–0 Canucks victory over the Carolina Hurricanes on December 5, 2017.

Markström was knocked out of the Carolina Hurricanes on December 12, 2019, stopping 43 shots on target in a 1–0 Canucks victory over the Carolina Hurricanes, bringing his second-place franchise record for most shots stopped in a regular season game (tied with former Canucks goaltender Cory Schneider). Markström was chosen for his first NHL All-Star Game on January 3rd, defeating Vegas Golden Knights goaltender Marc-André Fleury.

Markström, a free agent with the Vancouver Canucks, left the Vancouver Canucks on October 9, 2020, and committed to a six-year, $36 million contract with the Calgary Flames. In 43 games in the pandemic-shortened 2020–21 season, he was unable to recover from a concussion midway through after crashing with Canucks forward Tanner Pearson who was initially undiagnosed. The Flames barely qualified for the 2021 Stanley Cup playoffs, finishing barely behind the Montreal Canadiens for their final berth in the all-Canadian North Division.

The NHL returned to its regular format for the 2021-22 season, with the Flames re-igning in the Pacific Division for the 2021-22 season. Darryl Sutter, the team's new coach, who had a bad start to a mid-season coaching replacement, led the team to one of its best in years. Markström had his best season of his career to date, leading to a 37–15-19 record with a.922 save percentage and a league-leading nine shutouts. He was selected a finalist for the Vezina Trophy, the league's best goaltender. The Flames won the Pacific Division and advanced to the 2022 Stanley Cup playoffs to face the Dallas Stars in the first round. Markström and Stars netminder Jake Oettinger's match became a goaltending duel, with Markström achieving the highest save percentage of the first round, while Markström was "instrumental" to the Flames' eventual victory in seven games. In the second round of the inaugural playoff series "Battle of Alberta" in 31 years, the team met the Edmonton Oilers. Markström, who had declined to sign with the Oilers in 2020, had a disappointing five-game series loss, but he had a.852 save percentage in a five-game series loss.
