Tyler Myers Career

Playing career

Myers was the first round pick of the Kelowna Rockets in 2005 (WHL) Bantam Draft, 19th overall. Myers played minor hockey at Athol Murray College of Notre Dame, a AAA midget team, prior to playing in the WHL. Myers began his playing days with the Rockets in 2005-06. Myers was ranked fourth among North American draft-eligible skaters by the NHL Central Scouting Service, following his NHL draft year in 2007-08.

He was ranked 12th overall by the Buffalo Sabres in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft, after the Los Angeles Kings gave the LA Kings a third-round pick to jump from the 13th position. Following a rookie record-high 42-point regular season, Myers helped the Rockets win the Ed Chynoweth Cup in 2009. Myers was instrumental in the franchise's third WHL title and was named MVP of the WHL Playoff, scoring 20 points during the Rockets' playoff run. Following Myers' WHL championship triumph with the Rockets, he was signed to a three-year, entry-level deal with the Buffalo Sabres on May 11, 2009.

Myers appeared with the Buffalo Sabres in 2009–2010. On October 8, 2009, he scored his first NHL point, as an assist, against the Phoenix Coyotes. Myers scored his first NHL goal against the New York Islanders' Dwayne Roloson on Monday. It was also his first multi-point game, with him assisting as well. Myers was used in the sixth round of a shootout against the Tampa Bay Lightning on October 24, and he was named game champion. The club decided to keep him in Buffalo rather than return him to the Rockets in the first year of his contract after a good first nine games with the Sabres.

Myers quickly established himself as the Sabres' top defenseman, leading the team in average ice time per game in his rookie season. Despite being part of a little-known group of Sabres players struck with food poisoning the night before, he registered 28:32 of ice time in a regulation loss to the Ottawa Senators on December 16, 2009. Myers' first multi-goal game took place on January 8, 2010. As the Sabres defeated the Toronto Maple Leafs 3–2, he scored twice on the powerplay, including the game-winner. Tim Kennedy also assisted Tim Kennedy on the Sabres' first goal.

Scoring 10 points and leading all rookies in average ice time (24 minutes and 42 seconds per game) for January 2010 games, Myers was named the NHL Rookie of the Month. He played his first two years in the NHL, as well as Sabres defensemen, in every game this season, totaling 11 goals and 37 assists and winning 1 point in the playoffs from 1 goal. At the NHL Awards Ceremony in Las Vegas on June 23, 2010, Myers was presented with the Calder Memorial Trophy, beating out forward Matt Duchene of the Colorado Avalanche and goaltender Jimmy Howard of the Detroit Red Wings.

In a 4–3 overtime victory over the Vancouver Canucks on November 15, 2010, Myers scored his fifth goal of the season. In a 3–2 victory over the Florida Panthers on February 10, 2011, Myers scored another overtime goal. The Myers finished the season with only 2 goals and 27 assists, up to 37 points and 6 points in the playoffs, with 1 goal and 5 assists. The Sabres signed Myers to a 7-year, $38.5 million deal on September 15, 2011. Myers was banned for three games after boarding Montreal Canadiens forward Scott Gomez on March 12, 2012. During the 2012 NHL lockout, Myers signed with Klagenfurt AC of the Austrian Erste Bank Hockey League on October 14, 2012.

The Sabres revealed on April 12, 2013 that Myers had broken a bone in his leg during the team's 5–1 loss to the Montreal Canadiens on the night before and would miss the remainder of the season.

Myers, Drew Stafford, Brendan Lemieux, Joel Armia, and a conditional first-round pick (used to select Jack Roslovic) in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft were traded to the Winnipeg Jets in exchange for Evander Kane, Zach Bogosian, and Jason Kasdorf's rights.

The Jets announced hip and knee surgeries early in Myers' 2015-16 season on March 24, 2016.

In a 3–2 overtime loss to the Colorado Avalanche on November 11, 2016, Myers would play in 11 games before suffering an undisclosed lower-body injury (unrelated to the hip and knee surgeries he had during the previous offseason) during the 2016–17 season. Surgery was not expected to be needed, but Myers would need surgery to fix the lower body injury, bringing an end to myers second straight season due to surgery.

Myers will stay healthy through the 2017-18 season, appearing in all 82 regular season games for the first time since his rookie season and scoring 6 goals and 30 assists for 36 points while averaging 21:26 minutes, and the Jets finished second in the Central Division for the first time since 2014–15. The Jets made it to the Western Conference Final, losing in five games to the Vegas Golden Knights.

Myers signed as a free agent with the Vancouver Canucks on July 1, 2019. In a 6–5 victory over the visiting Buffalo Sabres, one of Myers' former teams, Myers scored his first goal as a member of the Canucks.
